"I understand your anger, and I apologize on behalf of humanity."
You put as much calmness in your voice as you can, and you extend your hand, palm up, hoping to placate the anthropomorphic plant monster.
The creature stops, and it looks up into your eyes. "Who are you to apologize for humanity?"
"No one special," you say, "I'm just another person trying to figure it out."
"Oh," says the creature. It still vibrates with fury, but the aggressiveness seems to have left it, and there's an almost hopeful glint to its anger.
Encouraged, you haltingly suggest, "Can I help?"
"Do you know what you're helping with?" it asks.
"No," you respond.
"Maybe that's for the best," the creature turns from you and begins digging a hole. Not knowing what to make of this, you wait. Roots reach up from the ground around the hole and seem to reinforce the walls of what soon becomes a tunnel. After only a few minutes, the creature has disappeared from view into this rootbound tunnel about three feet in diameter that enters the earth with a slight slope.
Follow the creature into the dark tunnel.
