Is Facebook Still Popular After The Data Controversy?

in #thealliance6 years ago

The data controversy a few weeks ago seemed to have shaken up Facebook especially its owner Mark Zuckerberg. There were viral posts that claimed people were deleting their accounts in large numbers. There was even a hashtag for it called #deletefacebook that appeared all over social networks.

So was it successful and did Facebook lose users? The truth is people might have indeed deleted their Facebook account at the time of the viral posts. Most people were really disgusted that Facebook was using their data without their knowledge.

The truth is, and brace for the surprise, Facebook's delete account option(called Deactivate Facebook) does not actually delete the account. If you use the option you are asked if you are sure that you want to delete your account. Then comes a question as to why you want to delete your account with some options.

At the end of the process you are sent an email at your registered email address for you to confirm that you really would like to delete the account. Once you click the confirmation link in the email you think that your Facebook account has been deleted.

Except that it is not.

Say for example, you forget that you had deleted your account and proceed to log in as usual, using your email addy and password - it will log you back in. I think it does ask you a quick question first whether you would like to reactivate your account and then a message shows that it is being processed.

You might think that the processing time may be a few hours maybe, but you will be pleasantly surprised that in a few seconds you will receive an email welcoming you back!

In any case each user has so many friends and family members connected to the account that he or she is bound to try and log back in, at least after a few days.

The fact of the matter is that the controversy and the adverse publicity did not make a difference to Facebook. It has almost 1.5 billion users active on its site even now.

It only shows how dependent people can get to social networks like Facebook - and also Steemit. Isn't Steemit addictive too, even more perhaps because of the community and money?

Would you please UPVOTE and RESTEEM this post so that it can reach others too?
