1 million Steemians! | How Many Are Active?

in #thealliance6 years ago

Many of you must have read the @steemitblog post which announced the signing up of the one millionth user. I congratulate @ned and team for having achieved this feat. Here is a snippet of the announcement:

Today, the one millionth account was created on the Steem blockchain!

The number of new users joining the Steem platform each day continues to grow, and at an increasing rate. More impressive than the number of accounts, however, is the amount of user activity we have.

Every day, the Steem blockchain is producing more than a million transactions. That is more transactions per day than all other blockchains combined!

There are around 60,000 unique accounts transacting on the Steem blockchain each day.

Steemit.com gets over 250,000 unique daily visitors, and there are hundreds of other DApps interacting with the Steem blockchain, which have large and growing user bases.

The user activity in numbers does seem very impressive at first as the post says - which I presume refers to the rate of activity. The Steemit feed which I call the never ending Steemit Niagara moves at such a fast pace that new posts appear on top of the feed at the blink of an eyelid.

However, I wish I had better things to say about the quality of activity though. Without any system in place to check the quality of posts, talking about the high rate of activity is just like empty vessels making a lot of noise and some wanting to call it music.

The same accounts causing the high rate of activity are also making transactions which is also bound to be high. No surprise there.

Steemit has one of highest rates of traffic on the net with 250k unique visitors daily - which is really commendable. But what I dread is what those visitors might see when they start "exploring" Steemit a bit more.

I presume most visitors land on Steemit through searches probably related to cryptocurrency topics. When you land on an article on a site and finish reading it, you tend to look for more content on the site, usually by going to the home page. Imagine the shock when they see the bot upvoted trash and other mediocre content like vlog rambling - I doubt whether any of them would want to visit Steemit again after spending a few minutes on any of its trending pages.

Honestly, the high numbers do not mean much, even though I realize how much hard work must have gone in by individuals, on the development side as well as the content creation side. There is a difference between “doing things right" and “doing the right things."

There are millions searching online for how to make money methods and quite a few of them arrive on Steemit. They sign up when they realize that they can post any comment and earn a few cents for it if they keep doing it again and again. In a few days or weeks when they see that earning something worthwhile involves a lot of work they quit and never come back again.

By the time they quit they would have racked up a post count in hundreds or even thousands with comments like "thanks for sharing", "nice post" etc. and done hundreds of "follows" in the hope of getting a quid pro quo "follow-back". Unfortunately you will find quite a few of these "followers" in your account too.

Then sadly, quite a few users leave after they get fed up of what they feel is an unfair system of upvoting (and downvoting), and the difficulty of getting their posts seen even after creating tons of good content and hours and hours of participation in the form of curation(after reading posts) and commenting.

I suspect that most of the 1 million accounts are dormant accounts and some maybe duplicate accounts created by bot owners or whales who want to make some money with them through upvotes.

I'll hold on and not pop the cork yet. If Steemit is really becoming so popular, with or without SMTs, the value of Steem should cross at least 10 USD instead of being in the 1 USD - 3 USD range on an average most of time for the last 2 years.

I do hope that happens and the Steem value rises through 10 USD to 100 USD and more. I haven't given up hope yet!

Would you please UPVOTE and RESTEEM this post so that it can reach others too?

Don’t lose your hope and faith on steemit..,at least we should wait till the awaited alpha version 😂

I have faith, but some criticism is necessary for us to improve. I would like to see Steemit on top of the heap and Steem in the top ten cryptos!

I have seen a number of highly talented artists sign up on Steemit, then quickly become disenchanted when they see that an excellent post isn't enough. It would be nice if something could be done to help these people to stay. When a beautiful piece of artwork with a description generates 2 cents or less, they go on to other things. It is hard to blame them...
