A very quiet re-opening of hashing in Chiang Mai

in #thailand4 years ago

It's been over 10 weeks since we last did a hash run because of the Covid business that has shut down most of what is going on in the country. We probably could have continued to do them anyway and most of our members were more than willing to take a chance on spreading the virus in order to do so. However, in the interest of not attracting unwanted attention from the authorities and government, we complied with the requirements that were broadcast to the nation.

We weren't officially given the go-ahead by the police, but as we see more and more stuff opening up in the city / nation, we decided as a group that we would start the hashes again. We are still doing this on the quiet and don't advertise at all, but I feel as though it is ok to talk about what we are doing here.

There really isn't that many of us left here in Chiang Mai and it is likely going to remain that way for quite some time seeing as how it is almost impossible to get back into Thailand should one of our members decided to tuck tail and run back to their home country. If we are able to get more than 15 people to a hash it is considered a great success. We do, however, need to be a bit covert about how we go about getting to the sites because this is where it will be most evident to the authorities and they might have a problem with that.

Our runs are done way out of town by choice and they always have been. It is very unlikely that we will encounter someone that we didn't bring along with us on any of these things and this is intentional by design. We want to be away from other people on these runs in order to enjoy a little bit of peach and quiet after all.

This one was a little bit over our normal 5k and that is fine. The folks that have been sitting their fat asses on the sofa watching Netflix needed to sweat a little more than usual and how far everyone had fallen in their fitness was evident straight away. Some of the boys (old f**kers) were breathing heavy on the first 200 meters and for them, it would turn out to be a long day.

Upon returning to the circle the usual booze and songs took place and I think I speak for everyone involved when I say that this went wonderfully. We will likely continue to be a bit covert about these gatherings for the time being as it remains unclear whether or not we are "allowed" to do this or not.

All members with any sort of worry about Covid are advised to not attend, even though there have been no new cases in Thailand for quite some time. We want everyone to feel comfortable and certainly don't want anyone to feel pressured to join in. Stay home until you feel it is safe for you.

If i can ever get a backpacking trip in again, Chiang Mai was one of my favorite places. I'll look you guys up if i end up coming that way again.

will you guys get in trouble if someone finds out that you are doing this?

sweet! How was everyone's times? Was everyone noticeably slower?

awesome. I'm looking forward to hopefully joining you guys on Saturday!

take a look at the website to find out about the revised pickup and drop off locations / rules. We still have to maintain a low profile in the more populated areas.

well i gotta say I am a bit jealous, but I am happy you guys finally got to fire it back up again. I know how much it means to you.
