SYNTHETIC MEAT AND ANIMAL WELFARE

Already last century, the American socialist Upton Sinclair, denounced in his work The jungle the bloodthirsty excesses that were common in industrial farms. His prose, full of social realism, dynamite launched against the abuses and torture that, day after day, suffered the animals before being converted into protein.

Decades have passed, and technical improvements, have done nothing but perfect the machines of death. All in the name of efficiency. God bless productivity. Uncontrolled hunger, sleep deprivation of chickens, castration of pork for a better taste ... a buffet free of horrors available to the consumer.

The food chain demanded sacrifices. That was the mentality. However, the passage of time was eroding the ideas, and Western society, more sensitive and well-off, demanded changes in its more than cruel hierarchy. Animal welfare movements were brewing, born in the heat of the 60, and with the aim of suppressing the evil that reigned in the name of the benefit. As a result, organic farms with free-range chickens, animals without stables ... with the notable disadvantage of increasing the price of the products.

Science saw demand in the market, and attracted by the dollar appeared on the scene. It was conceived synthetic meat, rich in proteins and manufactured without suffering, born from advances in tissue engineering. This dream, a few years ago futuristic, today it might not be so far away, because for the next decade these products could be sold at affordable prices.

A meat without death or torture. With adequate nutrients. It would be retired the time of the pseudo-protein soybeans and the vitamin crises of veganism.

Apart from this, not only the animals would benefit from this advance. Also the planet, as it is calculated that the industrial livestock, is responsible for 18% of carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, it plans on humans the ghost of overweight, that already colonizes the bodies of more people than the one affected by malnutrition.

So, synthetic meat only brings news to celebrate: less animal death, less obesity and less emissions .We hope see it soon in our stores and supermarkets, it would be an advantage for all living entities that dwell on the land.
