AI and Robotics : The Tools of Next-Gen Warfare

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

What will the future of warfare look like? I'm willing to bet it will increasingly include robots powered by artificial intelligence and there are many articles supporting this assumption. This article will explore some of the future applications of AI in warfare.

In a recent article published by The Independent entitled 'AI is coming to war, regardless of Elon Musk’s well-meaning concern' it made some disturbing points about what is to come...

AI will have the power to escalate, and perhaps even initiate action, before we can stop it.

Elon Musk thinks we should ban Artificially Intelligent weapons before it’s too late and a galaxy of star researchers agree. This week, 116 of them wrote an open letter warning that time was running out. The danger is real – though it’s not the one the public often imagines, of some malign Skynet-like computer developing a mind and agenda of its own.

There are many fears that AI will go too far eventually undermining humanity and creating plans of it's own.

Machines may eventually develop their own motivations, perhaps even their own consciousness, but we are a very long way from that; and if it ever comes, it will look far different to our evolved, biological cognition and motivations.

This is a very real concern for the scientists and industry leaders calling for more restrictions on AI.

A second concern is that machines would be indiscriminate killers – perhaps targeting civilians. In one narrow sense, machines are likely to be rather more reliable than humans in shooting targets – they won’t feel the effects of fatigue, or fear, and they are much better at recalling previous examples.

Technology has always played a huge role in determining the winners and losers of wars and that fact which has been true for centuries will continue to be true in the coming ones.

The real danger from AI weapons, however, is that they’ll be rather too good at what they do. Speed is their big advantage over humans on the battlefield. And they work too quickly for us to intervene when we might need to – for example, if our goals change, after instructing our robot army. The Ministry of Defence wants to keep a human “in the loop” – but at great speed, there simply won’t be time: the enemy might not be so queasy, and their robots will be faster and deadly.

This is my understanding of how robots will affect future warfare. Humans will simply be too slow to keep up with the pace of future wars. It's my hope that a stronger focus on peace may usher in a possibility of this event not happening in the first place.

What if I told you robotic warfare has already begun...

Well not exactly in the way you may think. Have a look at the following video and see if it gets a few laughs...

Techblogger Wrap Up

Do you think robotic warfare will replace human warfare and if so, is that really a bad thing? Could countries simply decide winners and losers based on a battle between bots?

If we have learned anything from the past century its that humanity is on a race to defeat itself through a lack of co-operation and understanding of different cultures and attitudes. Greed may be the biggest factor in the creation of wars but its certainly not the only one.

Interesting ideas, and right in the ballpark as far as I'm concerned. However, even while I agree with some of this, there is one truth of human combat that still exists. Regardless of how you take ground....you need human being to hold said ground.

Even with the advent of AI war machines, as long as it's still a human conflict, men will have to hold the ground. Sure machines might be dispatched to an area and might be able to stop the ground from being retaken....but with the guy on the ground it simply won't feel like we've "taken it." Further, this does not address indigenous people living on land that swaps hands during combat. Machine only interaction simply wouldn't work.

I hope machines don't replace us en masse in combat for one reason.....there will always be human casualties and if too much on one side is machinery, we may begin to forget the human cost of war and how horrible it is. Leading to a kind of apathy and possibly much greater human suffering.

As an aside, got to play with the robot in your first pic and let me tell you....it is a badass piece of machinery. But it is run by a human, so no AI....yet.

Very interesting points! I understand the point you have made about the human necessity to occupy conquered land. Even in robotic warfare assuming the robots havent completely taken control it must follow some code of conduct... They say there are no rules in war but doesnt the Geneva convention modify thay saying and add a clause that for some nations there are. That is an amazing piece of military tech... The enemy wont stand a chance when a device like that goes online with AI in a fully robotic format. Thanks for your thoughts.

AI is already.engage on the battle field long time ago. A drone is considered a robot, and the danger of sky net like tragedy is not far from reach. In fact facebook AI has been shutdown bec. It's creating a new protocol on there own.

Thanks. Followed back!

So this means the teminator movies were indeed not far off hey guys xD

I think AI in warfare can potentially be a very bad thing for civilians. When we use machines to kill each other, the burden of responsibility becomes an abstract concept. It is psychologically easier to kill a group of people by pushing a button than it is to kill them while looking them in the eyes. Drone strikes are an example of this. The more abstract the killing becomes, the easier it is to do it.

This sounds like wisdom to me. Lets hope things don't go too far down the rabbit hole...

Wow amazing pictures post on steemit
hopefully many who ngevoted you .. follow me maybe we can be friends well

Great Post, But i wish it would never happens, it will be disaster for all of world, everyone will get another reason to attack other nation accusing of mass destruction weapon or army. Peace is the way to live why cant leaders of nations understand.

Agreed. Lets promote peace and understanding.

whoa! A giant robotic war will be catastrophic.

Wow can't wait for the Japanese to accept this challenge. lol

This post will be featured to my latest issue. Thanks
