Would Skill Uploading Make Education Obsolete?

Looking at the way things are progressing in the area of brain-computer interface, it seems like one day we might make the movie Matrix a reality. No, I am not talking about our universe being some sort of a simulation, I am talking about uploading of skills to the brain.

If you've watched the movie, you will know that Neo, the protagonist, learned martial arts in a matter of minutes after the necessary skill-set was uploaded into him.

Could such a thing happen in real life too? If you had asked this question in the past decade, the answer might have been a straight no. But today, it sounds like something that can actually happen.

Sure, it is still science fiction right now, but if you have been keeping tabs on the latest developments in technology, you will know that this is a distinct possibility.

Schools Become Obsolete?

Elon Musk's Neuralink is of particular relevance here. They want to build a digital layer for our brains. Basically, Elon's logic is that AI will become vastly more intelligent than us and on the off chance that it might go rogue, we should be prepared. His solution is to merge with AI even before that happens.

Once the brain gains a digital layer, the sky is the limit for what could be possible. We would be able to communicate telepathically, control electric devices with our brains and in a more distant future, even upload skills directly to the brain.

If that becomes possible, whatever we learn in school and colleges over a couple of decades, could gradually be uploaded into our brains, without ever having to go to school. In fact, in such a world, knowledge and skills could become commodities where you could simply buy them and upload them!

This could create a world where everyone knows everything and has a wide variety of skills, depending on how much money they have to spend on skills. Even saying that sounds bizarre!

Sort:

Considering the world of fake news today, we would need to be cautious of fake knowledge and fake skill in such an environment. Malware torrents today could become skill fail uploads tomorrow. Besides, humans are unique, and we still need to practice what we already know to maintain our abilities. Secondhand experience would still require practice, and that could include a school-like environment.

You make a really good point. Practice would still be needed to maintain those abilities and future schools could probably serve as practice grounds for humans. Nice!

Regarding take knowlege, it always leads to failure. Add in a industry built in it would crumble faster than it raises.

Nope. But will make education system better as it allows the system only to test it(the skills). As in the movie Matrix, not everyone who uploaded those skills became The ONE. ONLY THE ONE.

Yeah, it would depend I guess on how the technology evolves, how people accept or reject it and how good it would actually be at teaching people stuff.
