Mechanism and Difference Between A Taser and a Stun-Gun

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

“Stun gun” and “Taser” are terms used interchangeably for weapons of electroshock nature. Despite the similarities both weapons might have there are still significant differences between them. For starters, one of the weapons is made for use at a distance, while the other is effectively used at a close range.

These two weapons under normal use are not designed to kill people, but excessive use and exposure to the weapon could most probably cost a person his or her life.

Taser and Stun gun are different

With the Tasers, it is solely the creation of the Taser International Corporation, and Taser is the name trademarked for the device. Tasers are used by law enforcements agencies in countries that have been approved with adequate legality to use them, and the device which is the only product that carries the name “Taser” is used at a distance. Tasers have a 15 feet maximum range.

Stun guns on the other hand, are of different types, shapes, sizes and specifications. Stun guns are only effective when they have direct body contact. They are produced by various weapons manufacturers.

How Do Stun Guns Work?

Just as the name suggests, a stun gun functions by “stunning” a subject with a high voltage current it emits. The current emission causes a high degree of pain on the subject.

The weapon affects the body’s sensory nervous system, but doesn’t inflict a permanent injury to the subject.

A person stunned by a stun gun would find it difficult to move or function for several minutes, and it takes between 3 to 5 seconds for the assailant to be disabled with the electrical impulse.

Despite its popularity with electric current emission, stun guns have not been proven to have significant effects on the heart or organs of an individual. Stun guns function more effectively, when they are used on specific body areas with a concentration of nerves such as the neck, hips or stomach. Such areas should also be close to the skin surface for effective impact.

How Do Tasers Work?

A Taser’s mode or mechanism of operation involves a discharge of two probes which are 15 feet in length, and are made of metal. The probe discombobulates a person by emitting electrical impulses.

This electrical impulses attack the motor nervous system, unlike the stun gun which rely on pain.

The body’s motor system is found inside and underneath the muscles and muscle tissues respectively. Tasers shock and disables the motor nerves and sensory nervous system, by using what is known as Neuro-Muscular Incapacitation (NMI) to effect its shock.

Between Stun Guns and Tasers

The stun guns must come in direct contact with an assailant in a bid to effectively fend off an attack. Even if the assailant is holding onto the victim, when the victim uses the stun gun, there is no risk towards the victim. A stun gun can be purchased with a voltage reading of about as low as 100,000. But a high voltage stun gun is about 800,000.

Tasers are developed to be used in various ways. The main way requires it to be used at about 15 feet from an assailant, and it can penetrate up to 2 inches of clothing. The metal probes released after a Taser is triggered, are effective in electrical pulse delivery, regardless of the body part it comes in contact with. Tasers can also function as a stun gun by delivering the electrical pulse when it comes in direct contact with an assailant’s body. The multi-functional nature of the Taser makes it particularly effective especially if the metal probes miss the target. The weapon also has a feature that enables it to release the rods or probes via a single-button function so that it can be used like a stun gun, in a close-quarters defense scenerio.

That's quite interesting. Anyway since tasers are used by law enforcements, do normal citizens get to use the stun guns? I think I've seen sth like that in movies.

Yes @nigtroy. In countries where it is legalized, it is licensed to "normal citizens" as a weapon for self-defense. And you must be a hollywood fan, like me......they do appear in movies alot. Thanks for reading buddy.
