How to build and train self-replicating neural networks

When you think neural networks are somehow freaky be sure to read on. It gets even more freaky now!

Also, Elon Musk (Tesla's billionaire CEO) gave some warnings about artificial intelligence last year already.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk fired off a new and ominous warning on Friday about artificial intelligence, suggesting the emerging technology poses an even greater risk to the world than a nuclear conflagration with North Korea.

Now scientists took it even a step further!

Scientists now created neural networks that replicate themselves. The network starts with some simple abilities, replicates itself and gets even better abilities. Just like nature does.

Scientists Oscar Chang and Hod Lipson of the University of Columbia said:

"Self-replication is a key aspect of biological life that has been largely overlooked in Artificial Intelligence systems"

They want to find out how this all works out. Will the system become more intelligent after replicating itself?
Actually, this gives me the feeling they are not really knowing what the outcome will be.
I hope they also made a big power off button for their system!

What do you think about self-replicating Artificial Intelligence systems?
Could they build up an intelligence and decide to grow into the internet, use hundreds of millions of computers to combine the computing power and take over all of this at the end?

Or am I just a gloomster? I hope so ...
