Well it makes sense for aircraft carriers and subs. I would like to see more solar and wind and wave. A problem here is they are removing hydroelectric dams. Wikipedia says 900 in the US have been removed in the past 25 years.

Tell me about. David Cameron our ex p.m. cancelled all renewable subsidies just a couple of months before announcing this new power station. Then he just quit?
Conspiracy theories...who needs em' when reality bites like that.
Subs and aircraft carriers I can understand but cancelling the alternatives is just dumb.

Yes I may be too small minded to understand the "positives" of tearing down hydro-electric dams. The same folks that want to do that also don't want nukes, or petrol, or coal, etc! All I do know is I don't have all the answers lol.

Getting rid of hydro is insane. Nuclear power stations are insane.
Petrol I like lol
Coal I can live without. I lived with pea-soupers (smog) in London when I was a kid. Very unhealthy.
Couldn't see three feet in front of yourself.
I do have all the answers haha.

I'm glad someone has the answers!

We all got 'em but not everyone feels they can speak freely. I, on the other hand, have no such hang-ups Lol

It looks like a really pretty place considering it houses nuclear power that can be deadly. After what happened with Fukashima I have mixed feelings about nuclear power. If a power station is in a place a natural disaster could harm the plant or if human errors make mistakes then they could become dangerous places with extreme consequences.

It is a very pretty place and you are right. Very dangerous when it goes wrong.
We simply do not have the technology to clean up the mess when things do go wrong.
The environmental damage can last 10's of 1,000's of years.
Life as we know it cannot survive.

We need power, but do we need this type of power? What are your thoughts on nuclear using thorium? Wouldn't it be a safer alternative? Also it couldn't be used for weapons. Well so I heard anyway.

Thorium is an older technology and lost out to uranium purely on issues of scaling the thing up.
The reactor that is being suggested here is a pressurised water reactor (pwr) a technology with a very patchy safety record.
For the first time ever. Last month 50% if the UK's energy needs came from renewables and yet the government has turned it's back on alternatives. Something very fishy going on. In my opinion.

I am all for alternative sources for power. I just wish we could all live off of solar power. Wouldn't that be nice?

It's doable if every house had a solar array on the roof. Problem solved. There are countries that are totally using renewables. Iceland uses 100% geothermal. Free electric and hot water. How about that for a sensible solution? Just need the political will.

I sure wish the political will was here in USA and every country around the world.

I'm pretty sure that one day the public will wake up and demand it.
You can't fool all the people all of the time.

I sure hope so. Yeah, what is that saying? "You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time." Or something like that.

Yep by Abraham Lincoln. Eventually everyone will wake up and smell the horse pucky lol

I don't know a whole lot about power sources in general except that nuclear seems so terrible. Like you mentioned Fukushima, Chernobyl, etc. Fukushima has poisoned much of the ocean. I think it's time to move away from Nuclear.

I don't know exactly why they're tearing down the dams around the US. It's costly. The only good reason is the reinstatement of fish and wildlife that had been cut off from areas after the dams. Which does help everything else in turn.

I wish we would all go to solar and wind power! I realize this ehave their own faults in their creation process but it seems more responsible in many other way. As I'm sure you know, Germany is big in solar and they do real well with it there. I don't recall numbers but I believe almost all their power is from solar?

I'd love to be able to afford solar and wind set up here!! Both would work perfectly! Almost always sunny and almost always windy. Hahaha

Thank you for your very thoughtful comments. The more we talk about these issues the more people may adapt their thinking on these things and start speaking out.
The nuclear route is a disaster waiting to happen in my view. Every time one of these things go wrong it is catastrophic and the land/seas never recover.
Coal and all the rest of it are bad enough but we really need to get off these forms of power and work towards solar and wind.
As you say there is plenty of that and it's free after the setup costs. There are issues with the creation of solar panels but it pales into insignificance in comparison to a nuclear 'accident'.
I do hope you (and me) manage to get ourselves some of these alternative technologies and reep the benefits of knowing that our footprint at least is not contributing to the mess we are making of the planet.

Isn't the web marvelous? Every answer at our fingertips. Well almost lol
