The scary “TRUTH” about social media FACE recognition software...

in #technology8 years ago

I have always been reluctant to post my pictures on social media websites. I have noticed a lot of hackers when been interviewed, covering their faces to avoid face recognition software.

Do they know something we not aware of?

Well, after doing a little research I came across a few articles:

Google Plus, keeps improving its arsenal in the battle with rivals like Facebook and Twitter. Google’s newest heavy weapon is: face detection. This technology allows users to tag the photos quicker and easier than before, without manually entering the identity for individual pictures.

What is really scary is that the algorithms used are getting so powerful and can even pick up every individual from a crowded photo.

Does Facebook's Photo-Tagging system violate privacy law?
Lawsuit challenging Facebook’s facial recognition system moves forward

Facebook sued over facial recognition, judge refuses to throw case out
Facebook’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit over its facial recognition software was denied on Friday, meaning that the three users who claim the social network’s photo-tagging system violates their privacy will now get a full hearing.

Google was hit with a similar lawsuit alleging that the photo-tagging system in Google Photos violates the same Illinois law.

What is really concerning is what if all the faces recognized are stored in a database (well they are been stored as per above video) then used to follow and identify us everywhere we go…well this will be good apprehending criminals quickly. But for an average civilian, I believe is still violation of privacy and safety.

What if the same technology lands into the wrong hands?

Facial Recognition: Who's Tracking You in Public?

Well this is NOT a surprise, malls have cameras, even casinos, banks and metropolitan streets, you name it…there is always a camera watching.

I came across a video by one of the companies which is already using the technology "supposedly" to track criminals and prevent terror attacks using face recognition and number plate identification systems.

They have your FACE and they are watching you.

I do not think they stand a chance with such advanced technology

I think that any technology in the right hands will always end up in the wrong hands, and it seems that some governments, corporations, and groups have one of each hand!

i suggest everyone who likes this post watches the film 'sneakers' :)

yes, watch it. you'll like it.

I know this is coming in late, and I am not sure you will see this, but...

I was checking Steemit to see if anyone at all was talking about Bittrex using facial recognition, and I see nothing. No one seems phased by it.

People getting locked out of their accounts, then told they need to do 'enhanced verification' to gain access again, by sending a selfie...and they just do it. So focused on loosing access to their funds that the invasion of privacy has become a sliver of an after thought, if even that.

It has my hair standing on end watching it happen...
