More Drone Usage for the Future
Drones are super cool bits of tech that provide fun and utility for their users. If you’ve had experience with drone piloting, you might remember your first take-off and landing. I might have compared it to the early days of RC cars or even slot car racing (if anybody remembers), you’re in control and in flight. When I see just how impressive the footage captured on drones are in 2020, I am blown away. Stability, height and beautiful panoramic shots that make for fine edits have made drone usage in media production a very viable investment for many. There are of course laws, safety and privacy regulations to abide to but it’s still another example of technology that enables a new avenue for content creation.
Drones aren’t just about taking breath taking footage in cool places. There is much utility to be gained from drone technology and it’s still being explored. I am a huge advocate of health and safety awareness and drone technology has seen increasing usage in activities that would otherwise be risky for human workers to take on. Construction workers on site take risks when surveying for information of existing conditions. Much of the world has not been captured digitally and there are still places that could pose a threat to people when working. Drones allow for safe inspection and data collection with no human risk.
Taking flight with such accuracy is truly impressive and it’s getting better with every iteration. Flight in such a compact form factor that much can be done for a very modest price point. Commercial utility is driven by many factors but price will always be one of the biggest driving forces. While it’s expected that drones prices would eventually drop, this isn’t the case. Price points are maintained as drone technology advances and becomes feature rich. I might compare this to the evolution of smart phones, the price bumps are often justified somewhere.
Drones are here to stay and will continue to see novel use cases. With recent forest fires, AirSeed are a company that are using drones for reforestation purposes. I truly love the notion of automated seeding and rehabilitation land. With the New Year coming in, I was pleasantly surprised to see drones being used in place of annual fireworks in China. The future will continuously realise new ways to use drone tech for exciting projects and I look forward to seeing it all.

Let's hope it continues to progress in the 'good' direction :)
