My Journey to the "Dark Side" Begins....

Did I get your attention? Maybe, or maybe not...

Well, it isn't really the dark side per say

But I have been always a fan of the underdogs until they are now one of the giants of the world.

So between two giants, I have to choose either one of them. And I have decided to journey to the other side for educational and support purpose, both for my office and friends... if I can.

Now you guys are wondering what the heck I am talking about.

Some people may notice what this is the moment you saw the first picture posted, because many of you are a huge fan of it.

Needless to say I did not get a brand new one...

But the moment I have tried it, it has not been a smooth journey.

Yeah. I will decide to blame the Operating System....

P80419-165815-002.jpg

Yes... I have bought myself an iPhone 6s

But please do not scream just yet.

Hold your horses.

The reason (or excuse) to try this phone out

I have always been an anti-branding person, as I truly do not believe it is necessary to pay through your nose to own something lavishing as an iPhone.

Needless to say that I have an equal amount of horror stories about men and women, boys and girls do whatever it takes to get their first launch iPhone, making me feel that this seems to have turned unto an occult for its latest model.

Not to mention its price...

Further more I had quite a bit of my fair share of horror stories trying to reboot and restore a corrupted iPhone from my friends and colleagues that has given me ampler excuses not to even touch it as long as I can...

Mind you, I never came into the Smart phone world until 2012... and for people who has been in IT division almost all her life and started exposed to programming from a very young age, this seems to be impossible... but it did.

So for me to have ventured into the iOS realm until now, is not rare for me at all.

So, why now?

Looking at the rapid change of mobile OS for the Android platform has made me realise that apparently one cannot use a phone more than 3 year.

My faithful, rather durable Meizu has been working well, despite of my countless times of dropping it it still worked until the last 6 months, it started to become dramatically slow.

With tons of Google updates, every 3 to 4 days.

From heating up fast to hardly able to detect the GSP, and draining the phone like crazy, this 2GB RAM with 16GB memory storage can no longer cater all the updates, despite me trying to clean up whatever cache and archive out all the photos that I have taken.

apps such as WhatsApp with countless group messages has driven this phone to nuts and I suppose this is no thanks to the constant new updates of dessert OS that Android has rolled out.

It just could not do...

So this has unwillingly forced me to try another operating system

But to get a brand new iPhone is just too crazy for me. So I got a refurbished one for USD300, 64 GB with all the added features like tampered glass and a soft gel protector.

P80419-170816-horz.jpg
The similarities of Meizu and iPhone can be quite remarkable... so my nano sim card could still work... and my Meizu today decides to take nice close up pictures for me. haha....

Needless to say, like the supplier has mentioned, it looked brand new.

Even the box looks brand new. (They gave brand new accessories)

But...

Yes, there is a but...

I realised the moment I switched on, it was lagging like crazy (before I added the sim card), and then, I realised that it has been upgraded to iOS 11

Many people mentioned that iOS still could support the older version of phones, but I think it is either the mechanism that supposed to be brand new inside (like the board) with only 2GB memory with its A9 processor could not get the lagging done properly. Maybe it is because it is still loading... I will give some benefit of a doubt here.

Until the camera features died on me.

like... LITERALLY HANG AND DIED ...

So many times that I have to end up shutting off the phone, let it charge, and then load it again.

After a faithful rest of the phone for about 30 minutes, it seemed to work better.

But there is another thing I have noticed. I tested this phone right after I received the phone, and the parcel came in pretty hot (maybe it was exposed under the sun for for postal services) and everything seems really hot.

After I let it rest while it is charging under an air-conditioned environment it seems to run smoother.

I have contacted the vendor and see what he can do about it, in the mean time I will observe will it heat up randomly and starts hanging again.

So what is my overall experience?

  • Siri is cute , but sometimes not very useful.

  • The maps loading is impressive.

  • The 3D finger print unlock is VERY IMPRESSIVE

  • The whole iOS 11 feel is good, tentatively easy to navigate, but it lags pretty bad on a 6S on an off.

  • keyboards are not responding too well for me, I think partly it could still be loading.

  • Importing contacts by directly connecting my account to Google account is super easy, only thing is that I am not certain is it updated to iCloud or not.

  • Camera function. Totally not usable. Less hanging after restarting.

Could also be the "beautify app" that I installed and tested and lags the whole thing to the point I have decided to uninstall it.

Otherwise, it is not too bad for a 2GB memory phone for basic use.

As my god brother told me, if I need to fully utilise an iPhone, I would probably have to go at least a 7.

Nevertheless I should stop complaining and observe a bit more, and see what I can do with this phone and how to make good use of it.

There are some functions I should really look into, because I have colleagues who uses iPhone and I need to know a little knowledge to help them set up their phones in the office when needed.

Note: They are super layman, well at least quite a number of them

Did I regret buying it?

I can't really answer this right now, but I hope it will be of good use for me. The next thing I will want to test will be Face Time.
(But let's see whether my camera works after 1 hour of rest)

Hope you have enjoyed reading this journey to the dark side as much as I have enjoyed preparing it.

Until then

You went and did it didn’t you lol. I’m not a big “tech” person and have had iPhones since the 3g. I do notice after my generation of iPhone has become “old” and by old I mean 2 more iPhones came out. It did start to get laggy and act funny. But I have had great luck with them, dropping them in water filling all the holes with dirt day in and day out. I work construction so my phones get beat up pretty bad. I still have and use my iPhone 6 ya it’s a touch laggy but I cut it some slack for its years of abuse. Lol

Guilty as charged @jlsplatts . hahaha... I guess iOS is very usable to less techie person as it access to all of it from the front end, but for a person who has been used to back end processes and seeing the whole network, it seems frustrating to have to go through red tapes (using the iCloud) just to move files around.

(I am in a windows based environment for too long... lol)

But knowing that it is quite sturdy for you I think it could do good for me as well (if you have noticed I tend to drop my other phones from my post) but yes, it does lag and I can feel it is quite warm at the back of the phone too. I am just a little bit concern, even though after a long nap as it charges it seems to work smoother now.

If the latest version keeps lagging the phone, I think I will have to request for the vendor to downgrade for me to see if it has less problem with lower version of iOS.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I truly appreciate that. I will definitely have alot of questions about this and need to figure out and how much do I have to pay each time I download from the Apps store. haha.

My battery is finally giving me problems on my iPhone 6. I bought it when it first came out so I have had it for some time, I guess I will invest a little $$ and put a new one in it and keep it rollin. My iPhone 4 still worked rather well, until it got stolen out of my car. I was using it for an iPod.

We that really sucks to know that someone stole it from your car. One of the reasons that I did not favour iPhones is because it is prone to stealing. It's like you can't even have a decent meal with your phone without being cautious it can be stolen anytime.

That is one of the worse trending thing to do especially in a developing country.

That being said, is it possible to send to MacStore and ask for a new battery replacement? Is it cheaper to get a new phone instead of replacing the battery?

I’m not sure I haven’t checked yet. I might just purchase a battery and do it myself 😉

maybe you should. i know in online shopping malls in Malaysia they sell iPhone new replacement parts . I also have seen that iPhones were opened and replaces with their battery. You definitely can try that out because your phone's warranty has expired.

Time to watch some videos on how to do it 😉

oh! Do keep me posted. Write a post on its process!
@chloephuan93 's 5S is dying fast after iOS 11 upgrade, I am just wondering is it also due to the fact her phone's battery is old.

Welcome my dear to the Light. And yes, you should have gotten yourself the 7 plus at least. It's the best. The 8 is too heavy and the X is too expensive for now.

Now time to get yourself a talking watch too 😊😊👍🏻

haha... thank you @coachmel but I find even the 6s plus is really heavy for a 64 GB.
7 was over budget for me so I shall stick and observe 6s for now until I find I am familiarised and actually like it.
At the moment synchronising files is quite a hassle without cloud services like dropbox, but I saw an OTG item on sale from online shops so I might try and write a review on that.

Gotta write more now to save up for expensive accesories haha.

I am so happy! Hahah! Welcome to the Apple family!! @littlenewthings

haha 😅 thank you girl girl.
Going to observe whether it still lags or not.
I am starting to wonder is it the tampered glass is making it less responsive.

When u say Dark Side, i thought its P........

Anyways, hope u enjoy ur new phone 😃

hahaha... I got you! 😉
I am still testing it and it is more vulnerable for a higher OS as its processor may not be able to take it with default settings.

I wrote another Review about that, but I let this post into curation first haha.
