Hacktoberfest - Support open source and earn a T-shirt!
Hey Steemians!
Its been a week since I have posted something on Steemit. I was caught up with my coding work. In this post I would like to inform you about Hacktoberfest. I'm a great fan of open source projects and github. I'm sure that there will be many developers like me, so this post will be helpful for them. You don't really have to be a 'developer' to contribute, it can also be for in the form of documentation, raising a bug/defect/issue, localization etc.
What is 'Hacktoberfest' ?
Hacktoberfest an initiative by Digital Ocean and Github, where you can win a limited edition T-Shirt just by making 4 pull requests (between 1st October to 30th October) to any open source projects on Github.
As mentioned in their website,
Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open source software in partnership with Github
Winning a T-shirt is not the important part here but contribution to the open source is encouraged. I strongly believe that open source projects thrive with the contribution from the community. Many popular projects are open source - Bitcoin, Ethereum, Steemit, ReactJS etc.
When is 'Hacktoberfest'?
Hacktoberfest is a month-long event. It starts from 1st October to 30th October. I apologize for posting this in the last week of October because even I got to know recently. It is better late than never!
What should be done ?
You must make four pull requests between October 1–31 in any timezone. Pull requests can be made in any GitHub-hosted repositories/projects.
How to contribute and get counted for Hacktoberfest ?
Project Maintainers:
If you are a maintainer of a open source project, apply the label ”Hacktoberfest” to issues in your GitHub project that are ready for new contributors to work on.
Additional guidelines for maintainers can be found here.
Contributors:
A contribution can be anything — fixing bugs, creating new features, or updating and writing documentation. As you would have guessed, find an issue labeled Hacktoberfest, but remember you aren’t limited to those.
Additional guidelines for contributors can be found here.
Need help to get started ?
If you are still not sure where to get started and which project to contribute(and create Pull Request) then check the list of few open source github projects.
