New Seasteading Project Might Soon Become A Reality

in #technology8 years ago (edited)

Current plans to develop a floating city that is backed by Silicon Valley might soon become a reality. The project was previously backed by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Peter Thiel, but he left about five years ago. However the project is still moving ahead and might soon see some major success. The Seasteading Institute is currently in talks with an island government in order to establish grant support for the initiative.

The Seasteading Institute and the island government, French Polynesia, are in talks to develop a special economic zone that will afford a degree of political autonomy to the seasteading project. And residents who get tired of the island life are more than welcome to unhitch their homes and float away. Construction is supposed to begin in 2017, with the project costing about $30 million and hoping to be completed by 2020. For starters, the island will be able to accommodate at least 30 people and is expected to expand if they see success with it.

What Is Seasteading?

Seasteading is a concept that has permanent, creative, and innovative communities, which are floating on the sea. It is a project that combines the principles of startup cities and seasteading, and it will position the floating city in territorial waters of an already existing nation.

It was originally planned to set it up in international waters because of the freedom that would come along with that in being able to establish a new nation, but instead has now resorted to looking for a host nation with French Polynesia. Some of the reasons for making that switch are cost, construction difficulty, and a host nation makes it easy for the seasteading residents to acquire goods etc.

Progress..

Currently, the Seasteading Institute is in the middle of drafting an agreement with the potential host country and that agreement will also be seen by a third-party arbitrator. Once the agreement is finalized, then the location will be revealed and a conference will be held which will invite investors, developers, potential residents, and others.

This is awesome news. I hope this moves forward without much push back. I have been dreaming of this since I read the book The Millennium Project

it will sure be a sight!

Very interesting idea, I've never heard of it. Independence is the thing...

It would appear that government is the big problem.
Thirty people doesn't sound very large.

I think a better start would be for someone to prototype a single family spar-bouy design that is less expensive than cheap land based housing.

Solar powered seacrete production possibly?

This is progress. Useful for countries with little land

Last update in 2014? Seems like a dead project then ...
