Drones Being Used To Boost Airport Maintenance Efficiency
The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world.
Hundreds of thousands of travelers arrive at this airport every single day. Just a couple of years ago, they set a world record for handling 100 million travelers in one year. And airport officials are now looking to drones to help them to maintain their busy runways.
Whenever airports need to shut down a runway space in order to work on repairs, they are losing a lot of business. The quicker that they can spot any potential problems, and the better they are at making needed repairs, the more efficient and successful they will be overall.
The drones are providing a boost in efficiency for them by offering a cost-effective method for taking aerial photographs of the runways at the Atlanta airport.
The runways here see a lot of traffic and it's important that they are frequently assessing the quality of those runways so they can know whether there is any problem or not. The drones are an easy-to-use tool that can assist with diagnosing the property space and seeing if there are any issues.
The drones allow them to get a 3D image map of the runway so that they can see in great detail any possible cracks. Because of the quality assistance that they can provide, it helps those assessing the area to more efficiently craft a necessary resolution to any problem. The ones that they are allegedly using for the airport project in Atlanta specifically, are drones from DJI and they cost several thousand dollars.
The drones are said to be much faster and more efficient than the old school method which simply required manual inspection of the area.
Federal regulations now allow for these drones to operate in the airspace around this airport and others within the country. There are roughly 500 commercial projects so far that have allegedly received approval from the FAA in order to operate around popular airport spaces in the US. The acceptance of these projects shows some willingness of the FAA to at least consider some broader applications for drone technology, in approving some commercial initiatives to take flight.
Drones have made their way into a number of different occupational areas, like farming, real estate, firefighting, medical, and others. Drones have proven successful in boosting efficiency for a number of different services, and it looks like airport maintenance is just one more area that could benefit.

Drones are becoming an important addition to everyday life.
A really interesting observation, I feel farming is another area for drones, it will save days of work for people riding to check on animals and pipes, leaks and other issues as well.
