OTDR tricky trace
Hello,
In this article i will discuss an OTDR trace issue - will not be an issue at the end of the article - that i faced during one of my projects.
Project Scope:
Testing for 5 optical fiber cable reels. Each reel is SM 24*10 CDAD 2225 KM.
Testing tools:
Chinese brand OTDR HSV600 with FC/UPC connector Nov-2017 calibrated
1 KM launch cable FC/FC UPC
Comway C10 fusion splicer
FC/SC coupler
SC pigtail
Issue:
1st reel 1st core test as below on the OTDR screen
Any coming core resulting in the below trace with a reflectance after 1KM from the cable under test start
After deep investigation here below the GHOSTS definition at the FOA page which is the cause of this reflectance
Ghosts are very confusing, as they seem to be real reflective events like connectors, but will not show any loss. If you find a reflective event in the trace at a point where there is not supposed to be any connection, but the connection from the launch cable to the cable under test is highly reflective, look for ghosts at multiples of the length of the launch cable or the first cable you test.
Actually it was confusing as the cables are on the reels and there is no possibility to find out a connector at the middle of the cable, and the OTDR is new one.
