"Real Talk : Depression", In Memories of Chester Bennington, Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain and many others
This is a real talk on what is happening lately to Chester Bennington, Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain and many others.
Someone dies from suicide once every 40 seconds. 2/3 of these are related to depression. Over 350 million people are affected by depression each year.
Yet in terms of research in the US we spend only $415 million. We spend $120 million just arguing about gay marriage to put that into perspective. Cancer on the other hand gets $5.3 billion invested. Granted there are more deaths from cancer but its overall reach is about 12.7 million new cases a year. That is a long way short of the 350 million affected by depression even with the accumulation.
We know so little about depression and it is about time our governments started to actually invest in research.
When famous, successful, rich people are killing themselves, we have a major issue. These people have things most of us can only ever dream of having. Yet they also get depressed and even take their own life.
Something is majorly wrong. People talk about a chemical imbalance. If that was the key then the depression rate would not have increased by 37% in the US in teenagers over the last 2 years.
The problem lies in our lifestyle and environment. We eat mainly processed food. We live in an instant society where marketing and propaganda makes us believe we NEED certain things that we simply can't afford. We need to look or act a certain way. We need to agree with the majority or we are publicly humiliated on social media.
Technology has taken the place of face to face contact. By gaining our freedom and independence, we have lost our heritage and values from the past.
Time for a massive reset before it is to late. Depression, anxiety, obesity, poverty, quality of life, cost of living and many more fundamentals are heading the wrong way and fast.
Time to say enough is enough. If the government won't do sensible research then let us educated them. Those of us who live with this day by day.
Depression is not a phase. It is not something imagined. It is real and it is a killer.
