Flat Stanley's Adventures and Mishaps in Sudbury!

in #teamcanada7 years ago

I had the honour of giving Flat Stanley a tour of my hometown today of Greater Sudbury, in Northern Ontario, Canada!

Flat Stanley was sent to visit from @thekitchenfairy and her Son for a school project to explore a bit more of Canada and the poor guy ended up in a Northern Ontario Mining town, that still has snow everywhere!

We had a guest tour guide that helped as well.

The first stop above was our pride and joy! The SuperStack! That's normal right? Towns are usually quite proud of there gigantic pollution pumping smoke stacks, right?

We went as close as we could to the bottom of it, and it's so large it took two photos to get it all in the photo!

Here's a bit of info regarding the Stack

The tower is 1250ft high, (381 meters). It was built in 2 years from 1970-1972 for a estimated cost of 25 million dollars. It is 35 meters wide at the base with one-meter-thick walls. At the top it is 16 meters wide with 25 cm thick walls. It has 937 tonnes tons of reinforcing steel buried in its concrete shell and a stainless steel liner that weighs 17,585 tonnes.

It was the tallest smokestack in the world from 1972-1987. It was even the tallest freestanding structure in Canada for 4 years, until the CN tower was built in 1976. It is now the second tallest free standing structure in Canada.

Next we had to check out the Big Nickel!, What else to celebrate in a mining town that is also know as the Nickel Capital of the World. The coin version looks way cooler than just a massive chunk of Nickel Ore, and what better version of the Nickel to use but the 1951 Version that is actually a commemorative of the naming of the element nickel by the Swedish chemist A. F. Cronstedt in 1751. The commemorative nickel even shows a picture of the Sudbury nickel refinery with it’s landmark chimney. We also took a photo with the plaque that commemorates the creation of the Nickel.

We also took a quick photo with the other side!

The Nickel is on a high point in town that also overlooks much of the city so before we left we took a couple extra shots of the town.

Our Young little tour guide also wanted to take a extra photo of the whole Big Nickel/Dynamic Earth Complex as well.

Lastly we came back home and Flat Stanley was excited to see all the snow around the yard!

He tried to fix my Son's melting snowman, but it was too far gone.

Next we headed over to the Epic Snow cave, but it was also quite melted and our attempt to stand in it failed miserably and ended in our little mishaps. Instead of playing the snow, Flat Stanley took a quick swim. And of course me being the ever ready father, I had to snap a photo first before attempting the daring rescue.

Once he was mostly dried up we took a couple last shots overlooking the yard as twilight approached.

Of course before we could finally head inside, someone spotted the farm tractor and like any young man, he had to jump inside and touch everything!

I hope Flat Stanely enjoyed his Trip to Sudbury and he'll be safely in the hands of Canada Post in the morning for his trip home

Thank you sooooo much

So fun 😂😂😂😂 tons of snow as well 😂😂😂😂

He got wet??? Poor Stanley 😂

My son said Stanley is too small for tractor 😂

Thank you again Phil and family!

❤️❤️❤️❤️

Lol, great little protect. Send him my way for a trip to Niagara falls or the CN tower. Even if the project is over... Should see how many Steemians can take flat Stanley on a tour in their neck of the woods... Send him around the world :-)

Awesome idea, Jason!

I will talk to my babe and see what he says 😊

Yeah, much to small! Turn out post offices were close friday, so I'll get him in the mail Tuesday. It was fun anyways.

Hahaha hope he enjoyed his trip out, hope he was laminated after he fell into the puddle XD

I know the feeling about snapping photos before the daring rescues, when my youngest was 2-3 I heard this metallic shing coming from the kitchen. Upon investigation I saw my toddler standing with the cleaver and an adorable grin. I thought aww how cute I should grab my phone and take a photo. Then logic kicked in and I thought maybe I should just take the knife XD

goatsig

Yeah, I have a similar one from the other morning, when he had a strawberry skewered on a large kitchen knife. I didn't take the knife first either....lol.

Aw man you took him to a buncha pollution full areas and then got him wet! Lol. I wanna give Stanley a tour of Hali and show em some fresh air and a taste of the east coast. Send em this way TKF!

Thanks GA!!! Too bad there's a deadline for this school project. Some other time 😁

Yeah man, we can't live on the beautiful coast. That's pretty much the best of what my town has to offer. :(

Ha ha .... Sudbury. I used to live there.

Great place eh? If your into blue collar mining town...lol

Was ok for 3 years ... made the most of it. Ice fishing, trips to Killarney and Manitoulin and Muskokas.
