Part 7: Sequoia + Kings Canyon National Park
Who doesn’t love big trees as old as Jesus and mountains that seem as if they’ve been carved by knife? Well these two combined national parks will satisfy your nature lust to 100% and offer a really great contrast of what these vastly two different parks have to offer….. right next to each other!
For convenience sake if you’re driving up from the south (LA or SF direction) start out at Sequoia. If you’re going just for the day across the two parks, spend more of your time in Sequoias Giant Forest and General Grant Grove. These two forests will leave you in awe of how big these monsters can grow.
My phone camera does no justice to display scale let alone girth. Most of these trees would require 25 adults holding hands to cover the entire circumference of the trees. Most of the Giant Sequoias in this forest range from 1200 years old to an estimated 2700 years old for largest of them all, General Sherman Tree (yeah really bloody old!).
A real treat was walking through a very original title of Big Meadow Trail. It’s a very mellow walk that surrounds a wetland with dozens of Giant Sequoias. This is a bucketlist item folks, hands down my favourite natural spectacle I’ve seen to date. You can see magnificent mountain ranges and deep blue lakes in many places of the world, unfortunately this forest is a unique place that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. This makes walking through it all the more surreal.
Further along the highway, make sure it’s a clear day because the highway driving through Kings Canyon has been one of the best drives of my trip. A rugged glacier carved valley that has many beautiful rivers, meadows, granite mountains and animals!
Some of the highlights from the drive!
Zumwalt Meadow and the towering granite cliffs!
This day will always be deeply ingraved into my memory and I'm sure if you make the effort to come see it too, you won't be disappointed!
