Thalassa Park – Aberfoyle Park

in #teamaustralia7 years ago (edited)

Tucked away in Aberfoyle Park is Thalassa Park, a wonderful and spacious park situated on Windebanks Road. There is so much to see, do, and play with at Thalassa. Whether you're young or old, there will be something here for you.

Over the course of this post we are going to tell you about some of the features of Thalassa Park. We'll also let you know some of our favourite things about it too.

The Playground

Let's begin with the big one here. Thalassa Park has just had a new playground installed. It is full of slides, climbing equipment, and fun bits for the kids to explore. There has been a focus on setting up a more nature based play space, as well as throwing in some of the typical fun things of a regular playground.

This a small slide for the younger ones, and a bigger slide for the older kids or those who like a little more of a thrill. Most of the playground is set up for older kids who aren't afraid of a bit of a climb to get up to the slides.

If your little ones aren't ready to climb yet, there's still plenty to do, the playground only makes up a small part of Thalassa Park. There is plenty of lush green grass to run (or crawl) around on, and a special story book walk to explore.

There should be something suitable to cater to all age groups.

Facilities

There are a wide range of facilities that you can use while at Thalassa Park. If you're looking for somewhere to cook lunch, then you can use one of the many public barbecues at Thalassa. There is plenty of shade and picnic tables scattered throughout the park as well.

There are toilets located near the playground, as well as bins, seating and shade.

If you're looking for something else to do then check out the walking and cycling tracks around the park. Your dog will love the walk along the tracks too. Just take note that dogs are to be kept away from the playground area.

Opening Times

Thalassa Park opening times are dependent on the time of year. During the warmer months between November 1st and March 30th, the park is open from 8:00am to 8:00pm. Once the weather starts to cool off between April 1st and October 31st the opening hours for the park are 8:00am to 6:00pm.

Booking Thalassa Park

If you have a big family event coming up, or looking for a spot to get married, then Thalassa Park has you covered. Although the park is unavailable to book after sunset, if you have a day time event that needs a large space, then consider booking the park.

There are fees associated with bookings at Thalassa, consult the City of Onkaparinga website for more information on this.

Booking is only required for wedding ceremonies and large parties (71 people or more). There is no need to book a space if you have less than 70 people coming to the park with you.

Story Book Walk

Looking to add a little extra magic and fun to the visit? Head down to the Story Book Walk. Located within Thalassa Park close to the playground is a little garden area with lots of statues, art displays and information about all your old childhood favourites. Each statues or display is of a different story book, and all are designed to get the children interested in reading.

Our favourite was the Possum Magic statue.

The Wildlife

Thalassa Park is a lovely green and lush space. This makes it ideal for lots of local wildlife. There are countless numbers of birds living in the trees. A large amount of galahs, magpies, rosellas, and rainbow lorikeets can be spotted throughout the park.

On our last visit there we even spotted two koalas. Both were sleeping in one of the many trees scattered around, and were close enough to get a good look at, as well as some pretty nice photos.

Just remember to keep dogs away from native wildlife, and to respect their personal space.

So if you're looking for a great spot to take the kids around Aberfoyle Park, look no further. The kids will have lots of fun running on the grass and playing on the playground. We know we enjoyed our visit there over the weekend.

We love hearing about new playgrounds and places to go. If you have any other places to recommend to us, let us know! Leave a comment here or send us a message over Facebook.

I'm seeing a trend towards more traditionally built play spaces these days. Less focus on feather beds, and more on imaginative play.

And i'm loving it ;)

Kids aren't going to learn anything if they never get a bump or a bruise
