There must be something wrong when a "third-world" country like Panama can beat a first world country. Even living in a tiny town in Panama, I still have access to a stable 30mbps connection. When I lived in a small town in the United States, the maximum speed that I had access to was 5mbps for around the same price that I am paying in Panama.

I know! It's ridiculous.

But we have coal! Everything is fine! :\

My country is one of the smallest and in the middle of Europe and we still don't have whole country covered with ADSL not talking about fiber-optic internet which is only used by the companies and few blocks in the capital. Moreover, we have one of the highest prices of internet/mb in Europe.

Wow. I thought Europe had this sorted. What country are you from?

Unfortunately governments are really bad at doing such a complex rollout. The stupid thing is that I think by now private companies would have had a better result for less money. Australia being a country with such a small population spread over a huge area makes it hard but I totally agree it should have been done in the cities first except they neede a couple of votes from country based independents to get the legislation passed.

Exactly. Plus NBN Co. it will be sold off after 2020. So why not have saved the expense and time wasted and just let the private sector do it in the first place?

It still makes the mind boogle at why they decided to change from the FTTP to other formats. I get that they will be able to reach more houses and premises quicker, but at what cost? Now we will have internet infrastructure that is out of date before it is even finished!!

I am sitting in Virginia in my Virginia ambassador to Australia chair and my blood is boiling. Now if you had NSA OR CIA and you needed to spy on your people or the rest of the world, you would have great internet. All jokes aside the 5G satellites going up in time may solve your problem. Don't expect much from government.

On the plus side, it's probably why hardly any Australian businesses got attacked by the wannacry ransomware. Our internet was too slow!

Hey choo, I wonder how you use electronic records or trading accounts in distant locations?

The internet works great where I live so I don't have any problems accessing anything. I had more problems in Australia than I do now.

Good to hear back from you. I shall follow you to get more knowledge on Australia problems so I can CIA updated.

We got better speeds on Christmas Island with NBN. However considering that it was like one step up from the fast dialup that really, really wasn't hard. That rollout though DX And don't get me started on the "plans".

Lol!

Didn't know Australia has that slow net speed. But why you are using internet explorer anyway?

I'm not. What made you think that?

Pity about Clark. Very fun man.
Mobile internet is getting better though.
Telstra is doing 80GB for $150/month, and 5G will roll out soon, delivering 10x more speed than the NBN.

Yeah that was a shame. RIP.

I still don't understand why you choose how much data you want in Australia. It's more common to pay for the speed and get unlimited data in many other places (with better internet!)

Actually, ignore that. You're talking about mobile data.

Tony Abbott's NBN - Mad as Hell

Nice!

I hear ya @choogirl. I'm on the Sunshine Coast and I doubt we will have NBN where we are this decade, so we are reliant on very dodgy ADSL. Seriously, very dodgy! Our ADSL cable is literally cable tied across our carport roof to the fence because our ISP (internet service provider)who is by the way the same as the landline provider)) is too cheap to repair the underground cable... Classic!

Yeah I remember it being bad up there. But like the feds, the Qld Govt is all about "innovation and smart jobs!"

I'm shaking my head at that story, and yet it doesn't surprise me.

It's been nearly 4 years I've adjusted lol

I hear ya! We are in a Telstra only area of Mooloolah, so choice is shall we say limited...so as you know the area we may be better to go back to smoke signals and pigeons rather than wait for NBN. Let's just say I spend quite a bit of time at The Coffee Club lol

I'm in Maroochydore. Prime location. And the NBN is still woefully slow, sometimes non-existent. Before the NBN I was with Optus mobile internet and could see the transmitter from the loungeroom. I was looking at it and not getting internet. This is all just stupid.
