Team Australia Mentor Project Launch

in #teamaustralia7 years ago (edited)

There has been some good interest in the Mentoring Project I suggested for Team Australia earlier this week so we’re going to go ahead with it. You never know if these things are going to work until you give it a try, so we will start small and informal to see if it gets any traction.

My main concern is that those kind souls who volunteer to be Mentors might get overwhelmed with needy newbies who want extra help. Experienced Steemians all know what the Follow-For-Follow crowd can be like and when it comes to charitable activities, there is ALWAYS someone with their hand out. So I think we should take it slow and just focus on the new members to Team Australia from this point onward.

The way we’ll start off is this - Once @choogirl has made her post announcing the new recruits, I’ll put a comment on her post calling for Mentors. If those interested Mentors can reply to that comment and nominate both a new member from the post to mentor AND some common interest that they share with the new member, I’ll update my comment with a register of who is buddying up with who and what those common interests are. The point of the register is to make sure we’re not doubling up our Mentors while other new members might be missing out.

I know that some Mentors will be extra-enthused by this idea and will want to jump right in, but I think each mentor should only choose 1 new member from the recruitment post. I’d expect at the start there might not be enough Mentors to go around for all the new members – and that’s OK. We have to keep in mind that there is a big influx of new members every week now, so even if Mentors are only picking up 1 Mentee every week, that is still a LOT!

Just to remind everyone what is involved, it is very informal but we would like Mentors to commit to supporting Mentees as follows :-

1. Add them to your Following list
2. Commit to Vote for their posts
3. Comment on their posts to foster some engagement
4. Be there to provide some advice (if it’s wanted)

Of course there are plenty of other ways that Mentors could help new members so feel free to go beyond this, but Mentors should not feel pressure or obligation to go beyond the basics. Mentors are here to help but they're not servants and should always feel free to say "No" to Mentee requests without any guilt or shame.

If anyone has any questions or issues, please feel free to hit me up on Discord

I'm @edosweet. I'm here to welcome you specially to this platform. I'm really glad you are here and hope to see you become a great steemian. Good luck to you! IMG_20180130_094825

Nice one Bugged. I will plug this in the next update and resteem from TA now.

Thanks choo, I appreciate the support! :)

Resteemed. Looking forward to this great idea.

Thanks @mrsquiggle it's great to have you on board :)

Sounds good mate, while I'm not beyond minnow status yet, I'm keen to help out.

Good stuff! This project is not about being a minnow or a whale, it's just about experienced steemians helping out newbies. It'd be great if you could get involved.

so my question is can someone that is not from teamaustralia or in general Australia be a mentor?

It's a good question, but I don't see why not? We are targeting Team Australia recruits but if people outside that community want to help I'm not going to say no :)

then all i have to say is amazing!! and i can't wait!

Nice post mate, love the positive approach and gotta love a Confucius quote

Thanks mate. That's the great thing about Confucius, his wisdom is timeless :)

Hi @buggedout - Aussie newbie here with lots of questions - how does one get involved? Steemit is not as as easy to understand as I first thought lol and any tips and instructions would be gratefully received! First question - how do i follow threads like this

I guess the first question is - Have you joined #teamaustralia? If you haven't then that's a great first step!

Nope lol - 2nd question - how do i do that?
I just clicked on that and it took me to a feed but i didng see a follow or join button.
TIA

Ignore my second question - yes i am following teamaustralia!
I assume this means the same as join teamaustralia?

Nice one choo. You beat me to it :)

Thank you - I will

what if you're relatively new and want a mentor?

You've got a rep of 47 so you're doing ok so far. I'd suggest join a community that shares a common interest with you and see if someone there will mentor you.

Sounds like a great idea. I am still feeling my own around so I am not sure how much help I can be in a mentor role, but happy to upvote and comment.

A great approach to a great idea. You know where to find me :)

Cool. Keep an eye on the recruitment posts from @choogirl and I might give you a gentle nudge in Discord if you forget. We have been bringing in a lot of gamers recently so having you as a mentor will be invaluable.
