Upper Thames Brickhouse Brewpub - A Zeke Tasteem Review!
Continuing the Beer/DAPP long weekend with Upper Thames Brewing and @Tasteem!
https://upperthamesbrewing.ca/ is a beer I had tasted and reviewed in the past but I have never been to the brewery, until now! They have an actual brewery across town in Woodstock but I was in the mood for lunch so they sent me to BrickHouse Pub where I could get beer and lunch.
Such a neat old building right next to a little golf course in a building which appears to be re-purposed after an era gone by. That it was in the past, the website makes no mention of which is interesting so we can only guess or google.
One thing for sure is the big smokestack, which suggests incineration or manufacturing exhaust, has obviously inspired the graphic designers. A really nice, simple and high contrast logo sees the stack transformed into a huge beer bottle spreading its wonderful aroma in a north-bound breeze.
The pub itself boasts ample parking in an accessible setup with a bright and welcoming entrance. Large windows on all 4 sides make for some excellent natural lighting with plenty of room and nice organic/industrial furnishings. Great use of space!
Can I start you off with a drink?
They either sensed my arrival or are in the excellent practice of leading with their strength. I had tasted their Take a Hike - Double Dry Hopped Pale Ale https://upperthamesbrewing.ca/our-beer/ in cans as well as at one establishment. I had to complete the circle and taste it how it was meant to be savoured.....fresh keg right at the brewery. The cloudiness played with the diffused light and the double hops toys with the palette as it is not sport hopped, but definitely bold and tasty!
A Meal with your Liquid Lunch?
I am a fan of single-page menus at places where the beer is the focus, especially when it has a great selection. I was happy to follow the numbered instructions which would have me follow the sequence of:
- Order at the Bar
- Take a Number
- Drink Beer until the food arrives
A great choice of snacks, appetizers (gotta respect a place that makes a distinction between those) sandwiches, salads and a section for the children of beer addicts.
When I asked "what's good?" I was answered with the Fish & Chips, Brickhouse Burger and any of the appetizers depending upon my mood. I know what you are thinking, ****"Zeke is going to go for the burger again."
A sound bet but recent followers will be wise to the variety I am pumping into the professional food review blog I get to put together on @Tasteem.
Turns out, I only had to wait a couple sips of the IPA before my Haddock Tacos arrived. I did opt for my preferred sweet potato fries over salad for the suspension of healthy belief. Pretty nice presentation for a brewpub eh?
Crispy beer-battered Haddock on a bed of light healthy stuff and topped with some pink onion and other healthy stuff!
My review would not be my review without the patented extreme closeup that makes me look like a food-photographing weirdo and gives you the perspective of having your face almost shoved into the delicious food.
The wall of growlers is a really nice touch. If you look closely, you will see familiar bottles and brands I have reviewed not limited to Black Swan, Jobsite, Nickelbrook, Great Lakes, Anderson, Collective Arts and many more.
Speaking of other breweries, it is a very noble and cooperative gesture to feature the product from the competition in this inclusive market. Upper Thames does this in spades as there is an amazing selection from over 10 breweries on the guest menu. Other breweries I have visited and enjoyed for years.
Since I was doing business in the form or working on my phone, communicating with clients and building my library of pictures and impressions for this review, I decided to treat myself to a half pint for dessert. I opted for a beer I had never tasted from a brewery I had never heard of. #21 is the Blood Brothers Brewing - Shumei IPA. Damn good aperitif if I do say so myself and I am going to have to look more into this Toronto brewery http://www.bloodbrothersbrewing.com/
After thoroughly exploring the menu and facility, I had to take some beer home for the weekend of labour I was about to tackle. Fuel! I opted for 4 of the Take a Hike Ale and 1 each of the Blonde, Brown, Pale and IPA. That oughtta get me part way a journey in the garden with a voyage into the reaches of their ale styles.
Zeke's Review
Many skip right to this section to get the thumbs up or down. Well, this place gets a hearty "RIGHT ON EH?" as the beer was great, and the lunch was perfect. Passing through Woodstock at 100 KM/hour like I usually do? Take a break and check this out and you will not be disappointed. Tell em Zeke sent ya and watch them arc their eyebrows in lack of recognition.

Ah yes I try and do that as much as possible. A nice change though it is probably just a placebo effect on the nutritional boost.

Being a burger guy myself, how can you ever go wrong when ordering one. Change is good though, and the lunch you ordered looks delicious.
The Take a Hike - Double Dry Hopped Pale Ale, sounds like it may be right up my ally. Fresh keg right at the brewery, doesn't get any better.
You see a lot of these older buildings being re-purposed, and what better way to use them than to fill them with BEER and FOOD.
With Memorial Day weekend coming up hear in the states,and the family visiting, the beer should be flowing.
It better be flowing!
I could order a burger every time I go out especially when they are the answer to “what’s good?” For the sake of my enormous fan base I change it up so that they don’t just get an extreme burger close up every time. ;)

These breweries look so good. I've only been to Woodstock once or twice to drop by the gas station or market on my way to a campground. Need to stop by for a beer next time.
