So we patronised one of my mother's all-time favourite restaurants the other day; Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice!

Chicken rice is pretty much iconic in Singapore. Its a local favourite, and definitely a must-eat dish for tourists who come here!
Technically it is known as Hainanese chicken rice, and it consists of poached chicken and seasoned rice, served with chili sauce and usually comes with cucumber slices. It was created by immigrants from Hainan province in southern China and adapted from the Hainanese dish Wenchang chicken.

Chicken rice is considered one of the national dishes of Singapore and is most commonly associated with Singaporean cuisine but is also seen throughout Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia where it is a culinary staple (people are always arguing about which chicken rice is the best, but tbh they're all yummy so who cares!).
Chicken rice can pretty much be found all over Singapore; in many hawker centres and food courts, and there are quite a few restaurants that specialise in making their own signature chicken rice. One of the famous restaurant chains is Boon Tong Kee!

Like many other local restaurants in Singapore, Boon Tong Kee started with humble beginnings, when founder Mr Thian Boon Hua started a small stall in Chinatown serving Cantonese chicken rice in 1979. Building upon the popularity of his silky white sauce chicken rice and emphasis on quality service, he rallied his family members to establish Boon Tong Kee’s first restaurant at Balestier Road in 1983! Before long, they opened more outlets over Singapore, and diversified ito include "Zi Char" (home-style cooked food) and eateries as well.

My family and I visited the outlet along East Coast Road, in the Katong area, and we ordered the a whole white chicken, with some Zi Char dishes and soup.
The rice is sooo goood! Oily, but yummy 😋
Sitr-fried vegetables (kailan) with garlic
We also ordered lotus root soup and thai-style fried tofu
By the end of the meal I was soo stuffed! If you're a big fan of chicken rice and you want to try something a little more different compared to the usual hawker centre chicken rice, I'd recommend Boon Tong Kee for sure. Their roast chicken is super crispy too, if you prefer roast chicken to white.

Chicken rice is always sooo good. Can't go wrong with that dish
yess it's definitely one of my go-to dishes every time I cant think of what to eat
