One of the best breakfasts that I ever had was at a place called Brenda's Meat & Three in the heart of San Francisco, California. They serve up gourmet dishes with a New Orleans-style twist. San Francisco is known for having some of the best food in the country with many Asian-fusion restaurants. But at Brenda's Meat & Three, it is all about the soul food.
Below is a look at the exterior of Brenda's Meat & Three on a Sunday afternoon. I had to wait in line for over an hour to get a spot at the counter. But it was well worth the wait.
Low Country Gumbo
I started things off with a cup of the Low Country Gumbo. It's made with fresh crab, shrimp, andouille sausage, okra, tomato, scallion and rice. It had a nice roasty spice flavor and was loaded with chunks of meat. Although it was a small portion, I can honestly say it was the tastiest gumbo I've had in my life.
Grandma's Molasses-Black Walnut Iced Coffee
I washed down the gumbo with a glass of Grandma's Molasses-Black Walnut Iced Coffee topped with freshly whipped cream. This was an incredibly delicious take on Iced Coffee. The molasses and walnut flavor made this unique and refreshing without being overwhelmingly sweet.
Fried Chicken Eggs Benedict with Creole-Hollandaise
And now for the main event... I ordered Eggs Benedict with Creole-Hollandaise sauce served with Fried Chicken over freshly baked cream biscuits. What an amazing breakfast creation this was. Definitely my favorite version of Eggs Benedict that I've ever seen. It was served alongside some cheesy grits.
The fried chicken was juicy and the biscuits were delicious. They were topped with a poached egg and a drizzle of creole-spiced hollandaise sauce which gave the dish a nice pop. Overall this meal was well worth the hour long wait. It's a breakfast that I will be thinking about for a very long time.
Brenda's Meat & Three is a great place to get some New Orleans-style soul food if you're out in the San Francisco Bay Area. Although you might need to wait a while, the food is well worth it. You will leave this place satisfied.
