Kem Bo: chasing desserts in Vietnam

Since I arrived in Vietnam, something catches my attention: food is varied and delicious. However, where are the desserts? On the menu of the restaurants, most of the time you cannot find desserts! Sometimes you find a cake or something like that, but I stay almost a month trying to figure out, what Vietnamese people have as a dessert. So, I went to a Facebook group to make this question…

One of the girls recommended me to try Kem Bo, on Bac My An Market. I live really close to this place, so, why not, right? And then this sweet adventure begins!

Kem Bo

Besides Brazil, which is my home country, Vietnam is the only country I’ve been where people eat avocado in a sweet way. In Brazil, this amazing green fruit is also a good dessert!

In Vietnam avocado fits well with coffee and also is the main ingredient of a popular dessert: Kem Bo.

Kem Bo is a mix of coconut ice cream, avocado cream, and condensed milk. It’s served with coconut chips in a cup. To eat, you must mix all together and eat like an ice-cream. It’s super sweet, smooth and crunchy at the same time. But, yeap, it’s a great dessert! If you’re used to eating avocado as a sweet probably you won’t think it’s weird!

Bac My An Market

Here in Da Nang the best place to try Kem Bo is at Bac My An Market. At least it was the local’s recommendation. Bac My An Market is for sure one of my favorite places is Da Nang. It’s where you can experience the real local life and also have amazing fresh fruits and veggies. The market is famous for the food and they have a kind of food court where traditional dishes and desserts are served.

Locals, motorbikes, fishes jumping from bowls and more! For sure is a unique experience to visit the market especially if you’re looking for local food! There you can find not only local desserts but also the main local dishes such as My Quang, Pho and more.

If you’re looking for a local cuisine experience including desserts, Bac My An Market is a place to go for sure!
