Two weeks ago I had the pleasure to spend two days in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. The Hungarian cuisine is quite famous in Europe but people mostly know about goulash, which is spelled gulyás in Hungarian. In a big city like Budapest you can eat where you want as there's a restaurant, a diner or a sandwich shop every two meters but we wanted to eat something traditional at a trusted place at a reasonable price.

Új-Házi Restaurant is the place I can guarantee you. For me it was the first time but there were others in our group that were there before and they knew what we are getting into.

As you can see on the blackboard, it's open from 12 am to 9 pm, it's buffet, which means you can have whatever you want, how much you want and you have one hour to eat. The fee is 1350 Ft, which is around €4.2. With a drink you can have a full lunch for about €5 which is more than convenient, believe me. I've been in Vienna a couple of days before I visited this place and know the prices very well.

Each day you have three soups to choose from. One is always chicken soup as that's traditional in Hungary.

This is the chicken soup with noodles. It wasn't my choice but it was delicious.

This is chicken ragout soup with vegetables and dill. It was good but a bit too spicy for me. Don't worry, it was reasonable but I'm not allowed to eat very spicy food. I would still eat it next time.

This is goulash soup, traditional Hungarian dish with sour cream. Very delicious.

For the main course you got to choose from almost ten dishes. Some were traditional Hungarian dishes, others were well known ones like chili con carne.

My plan was to taste as many dishes as I can, so for the main course I put a little bit of everything on my plate. Here you can see a big chicken schnitzel, chicken paprikas with dumplings although I'm not sure the term "dumplings" is appropriate here. I'm talking about that yellowish white thing like gnocchi. You can also see braised cabbage and grilled chicken wings.

It may seem like an odd selection but it was heavenly good!

Pickles, you must have pickles as well. I opted for cabbage with red pepper and cucumber.

For dessert you got three or four options, mine was this brownie like cake with plum jam and a chocolate ball with coconut.

The next day I did the same, put a little bit of everything on my plate again. You can see here "rakott krumpli" which is potato salad with eggs and sour cream, traditional Hungarian dish, green pea stew, fried mushroom, roasted pork and again braised cabbage.

For dessert I had this white cake like something which was biscuits with lemon cream, very delicious. The other was biscuit salami.

Also had a slice of chocolate cake with vanilla cream, also very delicious.

You can have different kinds of soft drinks, mineral water, tea or fresh lemonade as well as coffee. That is not included in the price but the prices are reasonable, a lemonade like the one on the photo costed 450 Ft, which is around €1.2.

I have to mention that I don't usually eat that much but this was an exceptional occasion, we had lunch at 2 pm or so and then walked around the city all day. At the evening I didn't need dinner, lunch was enough for the whole day.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. They all speak English, which is great as they have customers from all over the world. While I was there I saw a group of Chinese people and Spanish.

The place is very easy to locate as it situates near the Nyugati Pályaudvar (Western railway station). Itțs accessable by car, bus, tram or metropolitan.
