Submarine House: A Tasteem Review

I am going to take a page out of @slobberchops book and write a not so glowing review of this place. Ideally, this would have fit better in the "Drinks with Friends" category, but I haven't seen that one pop up in a while.
I've said this before, but I always enjoy going down to the Columbus, OH area to visit my inlaws. The food scene down there is pretty fantastic and the options/selections are vast.
We had just finished watching my older niece play in one of her junior varsity basketball games and by the time it was finished we were all starving. My brother in law and I had expressed our desire that "wings" sounded good, so we headed to the nearest Roosters.
As we pulled up to the place we noticed one small problem. The line to be seated was out the front door and wrapped a quarter of the way around the building. Did I mention we were starving?
Someone in the car mentioned a "sub place" they had eaten at one that was pretty good, so it was decided we would head over there. Having been craving wings, I was a little disappointed and all I could picture in my head was a Subway or some other major chain sandwich shop.
I don't have a picture of the outside of Submarine House because it is in a strip mall and it was dark. If you know what a strip mall looks like, you know that most of the front facades are similar and it doesn't allow for much customization by the businesses.
I was a bit shocked when we entered the front door to find that it was actually a bar. This was a welcome site because I had been craving some libation.
Although I had been craving wings, I was feeling rather picky. When I get wings, I want to go someplace that I know has good wings, not just a place that happens to have wings on their menu. More often than not you end up disappointed as my brother in law found out.
So we started out with some beverages. When I saw they had PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon) I knew that was what I was going to order. Some people can't stand it, but for me, it is pretty perfect.
@mrsbozz ordered the chicken tacos that you see pictured at the top of the review. My brother in law got the wings (which I didn't get a picture of). They were pretty horrible. He didn't even finish his. I tried one of them and they started out good, but finished with a flavor that wasn't even hot but salty. So salty that it turned your stomach and made you feel like you were going to get hypertension just looking at them.
I got the gyro and it was pretty good. Quite honestly, it is kind of hard to mess up a gyro. As long as you have a good pita, the other components can be purchased at the local Gordon Food Service. I got mine with these things called "Teezers". Apparently they are an appetizer made famous by another local chain named Swensons.
Unfortunately, they just seemed like something that had been purchase from the frozen foods section of the store and deep fried. They weren't horrible for cheesy potato and jalapeno bites, but there was something uniform about all of them that made them feel artificial.
My sister in law got some sub sandwich. I am not even going to take the time to look it up in the menu because I can't really recommend you go here for the food. If you want to take a look at the full menu, feel free to follow the link above. It would never be my first choice (as it was't this night), but if I ever find myself back here I might try one of their subs next time. Since that is apparently what they are known for.
Service wasn't horrible, but you can see they accidentally put my brother in laws more expensive beers on our bill instead of my $1.25 per can PBR. I paid it without making a fuss because he is family after all.
If I were looking for a cool place to hang out and have some drinks with friends as well as a couple of appetizers, I might recommend this place. In terms of it being my weekly choice however, that is a definite no!

Solid review. Sometimes you can't win them all. I'm a Wings guy so this would be a no no for me lol
Yeah, they didn't even have that many options when it came to sauce either. That's not exactly a deal breaker for me, but it is still nice to have choices.
@tasteem need to make some extra topics, how about 'Boring, Crap and Expensive' for one? While this all seems rather negative, in truth many eateries are plain average. Like the one I just reviewed.
'Quite the Average place'
'Utterly Terrible'
'Just don't go here'
LOL... I'll finish up now...
Yeah, I agree. The three choices of "a real gem", "tell friends", and whatever the other one is don't always fit.
Ah there's that too, 'tell friends - how bad it is', kind of fits though!
Thanks for your suggestions. I will discuss with others team member :)
yep, the way it is now encourages only great write ups but perhaps that is the intent. In order for it to be globally helpful (which is the eventual idea, right?) places to avoid should have candid reviews as well.
I wish you win!

A good review of a not so good place seems like you got the best of the food ordered :)
PBR's are $1.25? Sign me up!
I know right! The place down the road from me does all throw back beers for $1.00 on Thursday nights.
