Short's Brewing Company Bellaire, MI

I was really excited when I saw this topic in Tasteem. The fact is, I just got back from a trip and I was able to visit one of my favorite places to get a beer in Northern Michigan.

Short's is one of those places that always seems to get a little larger every time I visit. The beer selection has always been immense, and the footprint of the location is starting to mimic that.

It was dark out and I was only able to get the one picture of the outside. It was cold out and having walked there from my hotel down the street, I was eager to get inside and warm up with a nice pint.

When you enter the establishment, it starts out as a typical downtown bar. More narrow than wide, you can belly up to the bar or sit down at one of the tables.

If you choose instead to head right around the bar, there is another section that spills into the outdoors when the weather is nice and they roll up the garage doors.

Heading to the left takes you to this area where they have a stage that live bands play on or other events happen. On this particular night they were doing live trivia and many of the people shown were participating.

Farther to the left is another room with a little more seating and a gift shop. That's right, this place has become pretty popular over the years and as a result they have started to sell their own merchandise.

As I mentioned before, the beer selection here is pretty vast will all of them being their own brews. This side of the menu is what they have in bottle and can form. While they are great, I much prefer the other side of the menu that has everything they have on draft.

It might be hard to see in the photo, but on this particular day they had twenty two beers on tap. You can make your own flight by selecting five of the beers on the list as well. Another cool thing about Short's is they also sell growlers so you can take a big jug of your favorite home.

I am a big fan of Oktoberfest beers, so I immediately went for the Saufer. It is described from the menu as a "Traditional Marzen lager, also known as Oktoberfest, is brewed in March (Marz) and allowed to cold age until late September. With just a touch of sweetness up front, Saufer has a light body with subtle malt and biscuit flavor. It's highly drinkable, finishing crisp and clean, suiting its name perfectly as Saufer, pronounced zoi-fer, meaning chugger or guzzler".

If you happen to visit when it isn't the time of year for Oktoberfest, my collegues were very happy with the "Local's Light" which is basically just a light lager. Another one of my favorites is the "Bellaire Brown" which is one of the most fantastic brown ales I have ever tasted.

You should check out their website if you can't read the menu in the picture because many of the beers have interesting names, especially the seasonal ones that they don't always have on tap.

Short's does serve a limited menu and although on this occasion I had already eaten by the time I met up with my friends, I can attest that their food is just as good as their beer.

In fact, it doesn't look like they even talk about their food on the webpage because most people are coming here for one reason. I believe the food offers are mostly small appetizers and hand crafted pizza's.

I always look forward to my business trip each year that takes me to Bellaire, MI. If you are travelling in Northern Michigan and you find yourself in the area, you should definitely stop in and check out Short's, you won't be dissappointed!

My drinking days are gone, but I will probably engage a little at SF3. UK beer is generally crap and full of chemicals which makes me feel bad the next day so I have to be careful.

'Traditional Marzen lager' does look appealing.

It was fantastic! You guys will probably be a little too late to get something similar over in Poland. Maybe you will get lucky though!

The place reminds me of my brother's favorite place in Spokane, Wa. It' in an old car wash, and they have several sections that they can open as needed.

I don't normally go, but we gathered there after my mother's funeral. They gave us one of their bays that would normally be closed on a Wednesday afternoon and it was pretty darn pleasant. I split a pizza with a friend and it was damn good.

Thanks for a great review. Good luck with the contest.

Thanks I appreciate it!

Great review, looks like a nice place indeed, dang i miss my beers, one of the down sides of being on blood thinners

I can only imagine. That would be hard to have to give it up altogether. Thanks for the comment!
