Kushi-Tei of Tokyo (Dusseldorf, Germany): A Tasteem Review
Last weekend, I went with my family to the Christmas markets in Cologne (Koln), which is a short 3 hour drive away. However, I really wanted to drop by Dusseldorf on the way there or on the way back home, as it is home to the largest Japanese populations in Europe.... which means, GREAT JAPANESE FOOD!
Luckily, I got my wish on the way back. We left the markets and drove about 45 minutes north (in the direction of home!) to Dusseldorf. I had several recommendations from friends as to which restaurants to go to, but they were already having long lines by 1800! So, we picked this little Japanese grillhouse, where we managed to get the last unreserved table before they started forming a long line.
The Space
The entrance was a nice warm respite from the cold winter night outside. There was a little display as we entered, so we could have a look at the treats on the menu before we decided to sit down. However, we were hungry and cold, and we would have sat down to pretty much anything at that moment!
The restaurant is split into two parts that are side by side. There's no real difference for the diner, but on one side there is the grill area and on the other side is the sushi and cold preparation area. Well, in winter, we were lucky to get the nice and warm grill area!
The Menu
There were some beautiful hand drawn specials on the menu. One of which definitely caught my eye, the Miso Ramen, which was the type of restaurant that we were originally hoping to go to, plus it is a great winter meal!
Somehow, fresh oysters didn't seem so appealing for the cold weather.
The menus are a long list of lots of little selections. This sort of thing is a dangerous menu for me to choose from, as I will probably pick lots of interesting little things, and not realise I've picked more than I am able to eat.
However, this time, we had 5 mouths (well, 2 little mouths and 3 big mouths) to feed. So, I was quite happy to start picking out things left, right and centre!
The Food
Edamame beans... this is an always pick for our family. For some reason, our kids just love these things! I think it is partly the fact that they get to try and squeeze out the beans before eating them that makes it just so fun to eat!
We are at a Japanese grill house, but our oldest loves sushi. So, we had to order a small plate. However, it was much better than any sushi that we have ever gotten in Europe! Imagine if we made it to a sushi specialty restaurant!
In the background, you can see my wife's plum wine. It was super tasty, like drinking alcoholic plum nectar! However, I was driving, so I had a Coke....
Japanese Gyoza (Dumplings) is also a big hit with the kids... and these were pretty stunning!
Takoyaki (Octopus balls, that is, rolled into balls...) is a great Japanese specialty that I've had many times when I've travelled to Japan for work. However, my wife has never tried it, so we ordered a plate.
These were pretty good, and the sauce they had underneath had a nice horseradishy kick to it. I'm not sure what the flakes are on top, but the are moving around due to the heat from the dish and food below. It's pretty weird!
It's a grill house... so we got a selection of meat skewers from different types of meat. I can only say that it was pure heaven! The cuts of meat were amazing, and the marinades were just a pleasure.
.... and the final star of the show! Ramen soup! This was again a stunning dish! I've never had much crab before, so this was a new taste for me. I like it, but I think I would still stick to pork for my Ramen!
The Experience
The staff were amazingly friendly and fit us in, kids and all, even on a busy night. The atmostphere was nice and comfortable, warm and busy, in a good sort of way!
The food was quick and the quality was stunningly good! We ordered doubles of many of the dishes.
Judging by the business when were there (we arrived around 1800), it is probably a highly good idea to book a table in advance. They were already turning people away when we had just sat down.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone! Although, there are many really great Japanese places in Dusseldorf. We are already planning another trip down (perhaps by train next time), just to eat and get Japanese grocery supplies... and eat...

Now that is some scrumptious-looking food! What a fabulous find! The hand-drawn art on the menu is delightful, too! I'll have to remember this place, should I ever find myself hungry in Dusseldorf! 😋
Oh, I think you can likely walk into any Japanese place on this block and get a pretty decent feed!

Really? I don't know enough about the regional differences! But it was very nice and tasty!,
Everything looks super appetizing! I'm going to Düsseldorf after New Year, I'm definitely going to try this restaurant! I'm probably going to stick with the grill, as I've already had too much sushi lately.
The other option is Takumi for Ramen. We tried to go there originally (it was highly recommended by a Japanese friend), but there was a wait..... But this was also good!
I still have not tried Japanese food, not a single bite even though I have been wanting to for years. Reading this only made me want it even more :D
Real Japanese food is really good! Düsseldorf is not that far away! Well, closer than Japan!
