De Pannenkoeken Club (Den Haag, Netherlands): A Tasteem Review

Every nation on earth has a version of the good old humble pancakes. Sometimes, they are hugely thick (like the North American ones) or thin (like the French crepes). The Netherlands also has a proud tradition of pancakes (pannenkoeken) and it is quite common to find pancake places that serve up sweet or savoury pannenkoeken for lunch or dinner!

The Space

The Pannenkoeken Club in Old Rijswijk is a lovely little place that opened up a couple of years ago (replacing a really nice burger joint). Since then, we've been quite a few times to have a little bit of a feed for special lunches (after swims or when we do a bit of shopping in the area).

It is a really comfy and intimate setting, with a small outdoor area in the back (for those few sunny days in The Netherlands!). There is also a stocked bar for the big kids in the evening or the frazzled parent in the daytime!

On the weekends, it can be a little packed if you are unlucky due to birthday parties. However, we've foudn it hasn't been too bad and the noise is not too loud even when it is half filled with kids!

The Menu

So, the menu is pretty simple in general. There are savoury pancakes on the left and sweet pancakes on the right. Usually, when we come here, I prefer to have the savoury pancakes. If I want sweet pancakes, I would prefer to have crepes instead! You can't go past the oude kaas and spek (cheese and bacon)!

Then you also have the dubbel-klappers option. It is a pancake sandwich, with a pancake, with a filling topped by another pancake!

Pancake with an omlette mixed into the batter!

... and the kids menu plus the poffertjes (which is a Dutch Specialty). Unfortunately, this time we didn't order the poffertjes as we were stuffed by the time we finished... so I can't show them in this review!

The Food

This is an example of a sweet pannenkoek. Dutch pannenkoeken tend to be on the thinner side of pancakes, however they are usually crispier than crepes. It is a bit of a unique texture for pancakes, but one that I think works really well for the savoury pannenkoeken, I'm not so fond of it for the sweet ones though.

... and here is an example of the omlette mixed in with the pannenkoeken. It was my own one, I had thought to try out a different spin on the Oude Kaas and Spek formula (Sorry, I took a bite of it before I realised I hand't taken a photo... rookie mistake!). It was okay, but I think that the eggs were a bit unneccesary, I would return back to the normal pannenkoeken for next time!

The Experience

The owner and staff here are really friendly, and they recognise us despite the fact that we only show up once month or every other month. The cook always comes out to have a bit of a chat (if he isn't overrun with orders) and the place has a nice feel with some regulars showing up and just having a coffee and pancake and chatting with the staff.

There are toys and colouring paper plates for the kids, so there is something to keep them occupied whilst the food is being cooked. Also, being pancakes, the wait time for the cooking is pretty short.

I would highly reccomend this place for a nice lunch snack. Quick, friendly and cosy! What more can you ask for in a local kid friendly restaurant?

LOL! I wouldn't ever say that to a French person... at least not without at least a 10 metre headstart!

Same difference in my tummy. :v

Looks good. Korea has something called pajeon made with potato starch and green onions usually with a bit of kimchi or squid. I think the Canadians should get credit for putting sugary tree sap on theirs, too. Maybe I will have to tasteem next time I go somewhere nice.

Oh, we always order those when we go to a Korean place! It is a hit with the kids... and me!

Never realise there are so many version of pancakes. P.s. I also sometime forgot to take picture of my food. I took a bite then i remember..i need to take picture!

Haha... I have colleagues who have seen me do it a few times and they remind me. Meanwhile, my family hopes I forget!

The price tag is average across Europe, and the establishment itself is pleasant. I would go into it))

It is a nice friendly little place! One of the kid's favourites as well!

Do you know why they don't work on Mondays and Tuesdays?

Posted using Partiko Android

In the Netherlands, it is common to not have places open on Mondays (including post), instead there are things that happen on Saturdays (including the post!). It was weird when first arrived, but that is just the way it is here!

As for the Tuesdays... no idea! Maybe the owner has stuff to do.... (or if he has to be open on Sundays, maybe he wants the day off!)

Okk. In Ghana, Sundays is the usual resting days. Even with that, people now work because of money

I never thought pancakes can be look like this. I always taste English pancakes (Confuse actually which type of pancakes i have tasted :P) but never knew that pannenkoek looks like this because we named this another way... looks delicious..

If the pancakes are fluffy then they are the English ones... I personally prefer these thin ones (or the French crepes). It really means that they are accompaniments to the fillings!

The place looks lovely and the sweet pannenkoek looks really delicious.

It is a cute little place... and the pannenkoeken are great!

The omlette looks yummy!

It was very nice... but next time, I think I'll stick to the normal pannenkoek!

Howdy sir bengy! This looks like a great place! I like the coziness of it and the pancakes are nothing like I've ever had before but I'd love to try them!

Thin pancakes are the way to go! They are much better than thick ones!

howdy sir bengy! I was offline most of this week, internet went down. I believe you about the pancakes, now I just have to find such a place over here, that might be hard. I might just have to come over to your country!

Internet withdrawal! I think if you look for a French place that serves crepes. it would be similar!

Howdy this week sir bengy! you're probably right but I doubt if there is such a thing in my part of Texas! this is redneck country, lol.

There must be stuff around there... there was a French outpost next door to you a while ago!

haha! A while ago, you mean like 250 years ago? lol.
