The Iron Giant: the Ace of Disks
So I was on this Tarot group on Facebook a few months back. A lot of people there talked about designing their own tarot decks! It was a fun thing to think about doing.
I wanted to do a 'celebrities' deck, so to speak. Public figures maybe. Popular characters that make up our common cultural folklore. At the time I seemed to be running into images and/or artwork of people that seemed to fit many different tarot cards. I never followed through coming up with all the cards, in fact, I really didn't get all that far.
Calypso from Pirates of the Caribbean,
the High Priestess?
BUT. The card I had chosen for the Ace of Disks was The Iron Giant. Remember him?
Probably my favorite from mommy days, of the movies and cartoons we would watch together with our kids.
He's been on my mind again lately. So I was thinking about him and why I chose him for this card. Do you guys remember those scenes where he gets shot at by the military and goes crazy? I think he turns into a big gun. His chest and stomach opens up into a big circle of light, as if by looking at him you are looking down the barrel of the gun.
In my mind I was seeing the transformation of this normally mild mannered and calm, even loving robot (losing his mind and then getting control of himself), as the Ace of Disks.
Scene from the Iron Giant (Giant goes ballistic):
Wait for it...
Do you remember the scene where he and Hogarth are playing in the junkyard, and Hogarth wants him to (again) play 'Atomo' the evil villain? The Iron Giant responds with, "No Atomo." As in, I don't want to play if I have to be the bad guy. "I'd way rather be Superman."
What does this have to do with the Ace of Disks?
Disks are typically, cards assigned to the realm of money and value.
The Iron Giant tho, assigns the greatest value to his choice of who to be. Or who or what NOT to be. His choice. That's really, the crux of the whole movie. So I guess what I am saying is, the most valuable thing you have (protection, also - a disk thing, as I see it ... think of it as a shield, although swords too count as protection cards)... is your own SELF LOVE and personal will. And standing your ground.
As in, I choose to be who I want to be.
I don't have to be somebody's weapon.
