Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

The faces of two people unaware of just how awesome this event was going to be. Read on!

Thanks to a Facebook ad, we became aware of a monumental event: Star Wars in Concert.

Thankfully, Meesa and yousa didn’t have to watch Episode I – that would have been a big doo doo! (Enough with the ridiculous Jar Jar mockery.)

We were delighted that it was the 1977 original. It was the film that introduced us to the likes of Vader and Luke.. and poor Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.. all torched up after the storm troopers came looking for the droids. Well, at least the plans for the Death Star. Those bastards.

Whoa there! Let’s slow down a moment.

We didn’t just click our fingers and magically appear in our seats! As Hayley and I live a good seventy kilometres outside of Sydney, we have to make our way into the city to experience these kinds of magical events.

More comics! Yay!

Knowing we were going up there, I actually placed a midweek order with Kings Comics for the newest comic book titles I’ve been reading. Notably, I’m talking 30 days of Night, Kill or Be Killed and Old Man Hawkeye (I just read # 16 of KOBK and it’s just getting better. Wow.). When I have a chance to go into their brick and mortar, it is a real treat. So much eye candy. In fact, my pre-packed order didn’t even have Old Man Hawkeye. I spotted the Hulk variant cover by Marco Checchetto for no additional cost and I was over it like a fly on shit.

Kings Comics is the premiere location for comics and pop culture paraphernalia in Sydney. I’d say it also pips Melbourne’s offerings. Big call. But I’m making it.

Hayley and I were pretty hungry by the time I fluffed about picking up my goodies (she waited in the car!). We spotted Mother Chu’s Vegetarian Restaurant (check out the post by @Sourcherry for some yummy pics!) with high hopes only to realise we were between their lunch and dinner sittings.

Just our hugger fluffin’ luck, right?

We needed a quick vegan fix. Solution? Onward to Lord of the Fries!

What a shame there aren’t stools. We had to head back to the car to scoff down our burgers.

OMG, right? After all the glamorous green and purple smoothies I love taking photos of, this actually looks like I picked it out of the garbage. I was eating trashy vegan food. Shame on me!

After finally getting to Darling Quarter, we spotted the ICC! While walking towards the Star Wars signage, we sniffed some interesting smells…

HOLY SHIT! It was the GREEK Festival – And they had a GREEK VEGAN BAKERY!!!

We could not say “no” to more vegan fast food, could we? Of course not! Time to stuff our faces! The pastries were crispy and the desserts were rich and creamy. It was guilt-free and it was deliciousness all contained in a throwaway cardboard dish. Just what we needed!

I have to give these guys a plug. They’re based out of Revesby and their business is called.. Greek Vegan Bakery. No pussy-footing around. Right to the point. Love the simplicity!

Who would I be if I didn’t show a photo of Hayley tucking in?

How’s about the dude with the broken arm just having a nap? Hehe! Hayley.. dem eyezzz! Maximum enjoyment as she savours every bite. We ended up sharing one sweet custard dish and a slice of spinach and vegan cheese pie.

We finally made it to our eventual intended destination!

There were so many people. I just didn’t anticipate this many people coming. Now, I don’t feel so alone as a nerd. It felt like a warm, reassuring embrace – like Yoda wrapped around me like a backpack.

When you get the opportunity to hear John Williams’ score to Star Wars played live by none other than the Sydney Symphony Orchestra as you watch the film, you shell out the damn hundred and twenty clams per ticket and you sit there in awe.

Ground forces of the Galactic Empire seek to ensure the presentation is carried out without a hitch.

Arguably, some of the world’s best classical musicians were showcasing their amazing talent at Sydney’s International Convention Centre.

This was one of the most enjoyable days I have had for a while. Don’t get me wrong, you all know I can sit and fluff about on the balcony and tend to my plants all day long, however, Star-Wars is a big deal.

For those interested to know some more about my first experiences of Star Wars, read here for Part 1 and here for Part 2. It wasn’t pleasant to say the least.

I’m admitting this for the first time (Hayley didn’t even know). I was wiping tears from my eyes within ten seconds of the opening crawl.

The emotional power of having the orchestra right in front of me, almost close enough to touch, drew tears from my eyes. It’s hard to express, but those first few minutes had me really feeling the music. It was incredibly moving. John Williams wrote a very special piece of music that will never be forgotten. It will always be remembered as the backing track for Vader’s eventual remorse for his actions and the real struggle of good over evil.

What more can I say, here? For those who missed out. Too bad. But you’re in luck. “Luck”, I say? Yes. July is your next opportunity. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will be playing to The Empire Strikes Back. I know Empire isn't listed as an event yet. Be patient. It will be (pre-sales are on now, though).

May the Force be with you. You’ll need it. The tickets’ll sell out like hotcakes.
