Monument to the lost seamen and vessels of CHMP

"Monument to the lost seamen and ships of CHMP" is located on the territory of Taras Shevchenko Park. The discovery of the memorial, mainly, served as a catastrophe that occurred in the early 80 years of the last century. Then, went to the bottom of the "Admiral Nakhimov", killed more than 1,300 people. So far, the bodies of many passengers have not been found and are considered missing.

The monumental structure is made in the form of the hull of the ship, which has a somewhat remarkable shape (ancient destroyers) and special spiritual symbols. The nose of the ship is specially addressed to passers-by to remind of the symbol of the city and to honor the memory of sailors heroes. On the back side, which is facing the port, decided to install the icon of St. Nicholas.

So Holy should protect not only those who have shed blood for their homeland (meaning – peaceful repose), but also those who are still plying the seas, protecting civilians. The descent to the sea was also specially decorated with a memorial inscription, and the granite pedestal of the vessel was strewn with the names of those hero ships that repulsed the attack of German enemy troops.

Immediately after the end of the war, names some of these courts were given new ships CHMP, as memory about almost forgotten heroes. Those ships that had the honor to wear the glorious names – have long gone. They, like their heroic colleagues went for disposal in terms of the operation.

History and modernity

In 2017, the black sea shipping company celebrated 184 years since the opening of the Agency. Before this event, near the monument installed a memorial in the form of boards with inscriptions of lost ships in the period from 1936 to 1994. The list contains 70 names, and not only those who fought against the Nazi invaders, but also those that worked for the benefit of the front. These civil court has got a difficult distinction for the labor feat - supplied naval base of supplies, equipment, medicines, weapons and ammunition; and also carried out transportation of freights of special strategic appointment, wounded and the dead from the front line.

The plate was decided to be installed not only in honor of the memory of the sailors and their ships, but also as a reminder to local residents that the black sea shipping company, at the end of the last century was considered the world's largest seaport and numbered more than 300 ships of various classes and purposes. In addition, a lot of production facilities were concentrated around the CHMP, which lost their profitability after the restructuring of the main enterprise.

The memorial was subjected to vandalism several times, not only the memorial inscription of the ships was damaged, but also the icon itself. Reconstruction and restoration of the monument is carried out mainly on extra-budgetary funds. Here I would like to thank all the charitable foundations and volunteers.

Today, the Ukrainian veterans together with representatives of the power and employees of seaport are going to recreate former glory of eternally young city-the hero Odessa.
