Amazing place in Belarus - the New Grodno castle

In the city of Grodno to our days preserved many attractions that attract tourists from all over the world. The tour of this area is truly unique and draws us into the story of the events of old times.

This time we will tell about the construction of the XVII century that has the name New castle.

Is an outstanding architectural monument, which was erected during the reign of the Polish king and Duke of Lithuania August III. However, the idea of the construction of the Royal Palace and seat for the reception of Assembly of the Commonwealth belongs to his predecessor and father, king August the Strong. When in 1706 the walls of the Old (Upper) castle was destroyed by Swedes (Northern war), the old building decided to leave to build a Palace opposite.

Work on the new building of the residence of the nobles, began in 1734, the year. Worked on a project by the architect Karl Friedrich Peppelman. Residence in Baroque style was built seventeen years, until 1751.

New Grodno castle was quite an unusual project of the eighteenth century, where architects were able to combine a Palace complex (including the Old castle). The facades were decorated with cartouches and mouldings, and the interior was painted with frescoes. Later, however, for many years the history of the castle was carried out for its improvement.

One of the acknowledged masters who have had a hand in his appearance, was Johann Knobel, and Joachim Jauch. Stylistically, the new building was like and other works of masters, for example, the facades were strongly similar to the facade of the Warsaw Saxon Palace. By the end of the 1780s to work connected to one of the best Grodno architects of that time working in the areas of classicism and Baroque, Giuseppe de Sacco.

One part of the castle was intended for the meetings of the monarchs, the other was situated the king's chambers. In the history of the Commonwealth of the Grodno New castle played a major role. In 1793 m within its walls was signed the agreement dividing the state with the Russian Empire and Prussia. Also in the last days of October, 1794-St during the uprising, the building was visited by Tadeusz Kosciuszko. A year later king Stanislaw August Poniatowski was here signed his abdication. The Commonwealth finally divided between the powers-neighbors. Two years later the Russian Emperor Paul I ordered Poniatowski to leave the territory of Grodno to St. Petersburg.

New castle was owned by the defense Ministry of Russia. Here is the cadet corps, and later it was decided to arrange a ward of a military hospital. By the mid-nineteenth century, the castle was again altered, and the Oval hall of the ambassadors was divided into several rooms.

During hostilities in 1944, the castle was destroyed. Somewhat later, the reconstruction of the manor was entrusted to the architect V. Varaksina. Already in 1952, rebuilt the building acquired a new shape, and was executed by the new plan, in the style of Soviet Neoclassicism, which in those days was mainly applied to buildings. Here was held the meeting of the regional Committee of the CPSU.

In the early nineties of New castle passed cultural institutions, the main building and the left side was converted into a Museum. Nowadays the castle is the regional library of the city of Grodno historical and archaeological Museum.
