Hand Dyed Bandana – Indigo

Hand dyed cotton bandana in deep indigo.

The bandana is large enough (22″ x 22″) to be folded and tied as a headscarf, or tied around your neck. I dyed the fabric using indigo. Cotton fabric is resilient and will hold up to long-term use and wear.

To create the pattern on the scarf, I used a technique known as shibori. The fabric is tied to create different patterns. Each is unique as it is handmade.

Colors derived from plant-based dyes are one of kind, each one imbued with a natural, earth-tone hue. Plants can impart a wide range of colors from subdued pastels to rich, deep jewel tones. Black hollyhock creates blueish greens. Yellow onion skin creates a gorgeous marigold orange. Avocado pit makes the softest pink. It’s a joy to discover what each plant offers and I’m constantly exploring and experimenting with the wide spectrum of colors possible.

Aside from natural dyes, I use only the best quality materials and I try to source sustainable fibers. This super soft yarn is 100% wool. The natural softness of wool fiber combined with a heavier weight makes this yarn a wonderful fiber for knitting wool garments and accessories. Each skein is 137 yards in length, bulky weight, ideal for #10-11 (6mm-8mm) knitting needles (3-3.75 sts).

Why natural dyes?

Natural dye is sustainable and is less harmful for the environment and our bodies. Modern synthetic dyes which are in most of our textiles and clothes are made of toxic chemicals. Studies have show that mass produced synthetic dyes pollute our waterways, harm wildlife, and may be linked to cancer.

Supporting artisans:

Your support of makers and artisans reduces our reliance on mass consumerism, the biggest culprit of most of our environmental problems including extreme climate changes. Your support also helps to bring back lost traditions and skills such as natural dyeing. As we recover these traditions, we become more in tune with nature and with our community.

So simple, so beautiful! Such patterns we created in our teens. In Germany we use a plant called Färberwaid (Isatis tinctoria), or German Indigo to get that special dark blue.
