The new account @survival-archive will provide you with books & films which may just save your life

It occurred to me recently the most important thing we could have in an emergency is immediate access to information.

I am not terribly optimistic about the how the changing climate is going to affect agriculture and ultimately all of us, when the average person can't afford food any more.

If for example there was no power, no mobile network and no internet for whatever reason, what would you do if you needed important life-saving information?

The @survival-archive account is there to resolve this problem, assuming you are prudent enough to download and save the books & films on a device which can be charged by solar.

I will (with a little help from my friends) host the books as PDFs on an external site (tbc), covering a wide range of topics which can be downloaded from the steem account.

I will post the books one by one so that the subjects will be easier to find.

The KEY is to download them as soon as they appear and save them on a phone or tablet. Computers could work too but they need more power and solar solutions for them tend to be bigger and more expensive.

The need for quality, portable solar

There are many options on Amazon but I cannot vouch for their life spans or durability.

The only company I can vouch for is Sundaya.

While living in an eco community in Bali two years ago by 'chance' one morning I met a man named Maurice Adema (MD of Sundaya), an exceptionally talented designer and forward minded individual who has been been in this business a long time.

I edited this film (beneath) because I believed his message to be a very important one.

His Sundaya products are made in Java, yet they are durable and have a long life span.

The proof is in the pudding!

I came across a woman on Kepa Island who had been using Sundaya solar at her diving resort for over 30 years because there is no electricity here. We stayed for a week and wow, it was special. You can see the panels on some of the roofs.

Screen Shot 20161106 at 08.52.jpg

We didn't want to leave, as I'm sure you can imagine.

The point is that the lady who ran the resort told me the Sundaya panels still worked great after all this time so be in no doubt, these products are designed to last, unlike lots of the 'made in china' rubbish you will find on Amazon.

I wouldn't plug this company if I didn't really believe in them.

This is the the Sundaya JouleStick, demonstrated in one of my time-lapse films.

If I buy 20 of them, I can sell them on to you at $45 + P&P - payable in crypto or fiat

Aside from charging your life-saving device it is portable, efficient, water resistant, an LED flashlight & reading lamp.

Having a solar device like this is actually the most important aspect of all, for in the event of no power, PDF books are useless.

Moving forward

Many of you will already have PDF books or documents you might feel as if should be in this collection and I would like to find a way for you to be able to add them to the @survival-archive.

There will have to be some kind of review process just to make sure we keep them them relevant & not repeating subject matter.

Special thanks

I would like to extend a very special thanks to @arthur.grafo who has been such an amazing resource of information for myself and my growing family. Recently he provided me with an outstanding collection of life-saving PDF books & films which ultimately gave me the idea to make them publicly available so that they might potentially help others too.

In conclusion

Perhaps it is the power of the Equinox but in this moment I feel deeply motivated to do this and I can think of no better way to help as many people as possible during the coming new age.

Follow the @survival-archive account and keep an eye out for updates.

I've been thinking about possible solutions regarding where to locate this archive of valuable data and might have a good one. Are you familiar with the LBRY blockchain? Content creators can create a channel and share their content. It supports various file types and people can download the content easily (it's actually the default). The following is from this link (https://lbry.com/faq/how-to-publish)

On your local machine, select the content you wish to upload to LBRY. For video content, LBRY works best with MP4 files in H264/AAC format which support proper streaming. Besides videos, other popular formats supported are MP3s, text documents like markdown (md)/HTML, PDF, CSV, and comic books (cbr, cbz). In the future, the in app player may support additional formats.

Other file types can also be uploaded, but won't be streamable via the LBRY app directly. They can be opened externally for viewing.

It seems that a LBRY channel would allow you to host various types of content which you could then update by removing old document versions and uploading new ones. This seems like a good possible alternative or an additional option. More info:

Why is content downloaded to my PC even when I stream?

LBRY is a decentralized peer to peer protocol, meaning there are no centralized servers or a single entity storing all the files (like YouTube). Instead, data is stored on each participant's computer locally (similar to BitTorrent). When you stream or download, LBRY will store the content in encrypted chunks called blobs files and seed it to the entire network so others can also download from you. It will also store the completed file in your downloads folder. You can configure these storage options on the Settings page.

Also, I believe that there is an option to automatically download new content from favorite creators which would give anyone following the channel a local copy of the data.

This sounds excellent! Blockchain based is perfect.

I am yet to chat with one more tech expert in Bali on this, but from what I can see, your suggestion certainly seems like the best option.

Thank you my friend for your involvement in this energy sharing 🙏🏻

I downloaded LBRY only to find that my mac OS is too old at 10.10.5 (which ain't THAT old!), so I wrote to them to see if they had other versions which might work.

I just received this back:

No sorry, we do not. You can check out https://beta.lbry.tv instead - it may have a few bugs, but should allow you to setup a wallet/earn rewards.

As far as I can tell it is an online version of the app, so let's see how this goes for now...

Excited to start this thing!

I'm using the Windows 10 version so don't know about the MAC side of things. From my reading, LBRY is a peer to peer network where the data is hosted from the creator's LBRY directory on their computer and then also from any reader's who have downloaded that content as well as some helper severs (not sure exactly what that means or how many copies, etc). So, I'm not sure how that would be handled if using a web only version.

As a test, I used the same email address on the web version that I used to register the desktop app. It created a new wallet and I don't see any way to import or share the desktop wallet into the web version. If you were to create an account using the web version, I'm not sure if you'd be able to access that wallet using the desktop version. Also, if you create a channel, would you be able to publish to it from multiple locations?

I definitely recommend doing some wallet related testing to make sure you have the info you'd need to restore it or use it on a different installation.

I could upgrade my OS to Sierra which would accept the desktop version of LBRY.

However, I have a fear of upgrading my OS, as ridiculous as this might sound.

Everything works good right now and I don't want that to change. Especially while I am on a job.

Was intending to upgrade when the job was over. In November.

It is a bit of a conundrum!

Perhaps I just need to man up and do the upgrade???

I regularly create full hard drive images of my laptop (to external USB storage) using a product called Macrium Reflect, which works great but isn't available for MACs. I'm sure that there are similar products available but I'm not sure what they are. I wouldn't upgrade your system without a backup, especially if you need it in working order to complete your job.

To me, the most important thing with this @survival-archive project is the content. It will likely make sense to host it in multiple locations but I wouldn't get too caught up jumping through hoops with any particular option. It'll fall into place smoothly. There may be a way to transfer the web wallet to a desktop version later. I'm not a LBRY expert at all but didn't see that option within the settings. As you are aware, Life is an experiment so why not try it out with a single document and we can see how it looks. Also, we may want to move this discussion to a chat platform such as Telegram. Feel free to DM me there @dontmindwhathappens

Another option which I didn't bring up originally is BitTorrent. Again, it comes down to the need to have the content being actively seeded or else it won't be downloadable. Also, I believe that any updates to the content would then require a new torrent so this would be hard to manage. For these reasons, I didn't bring it up. More info: https://www.reddit.com/r/torrents/comments/6ns9ej/any_way_to_update_the_contents_of_a_torrent/

Finally I know what dmwh stands for ;)

I am grateful for your wisdom.

As you say, the most important thing is the content and the technicalities will click together in their own time.

"Whatever you can do in life, begin it"

And so I shall :)

Your quote also inspires me and makes me think of a quote from @gardeningchannel. The best time to plant a permaculture food forest is 7 years ago, the 2nd best time is today.

I'm really feeling an internal compulsion (in a good way) to be part of a community and begin a food forest. This is the direction where I'll be focusing my energy moving forward. I'm glad that we've met and can share our experiences.

Wow, what a great idea! I already subscribed to the survival channel and I would sure love one of those JouleSticks so let me know when they are availavle to order :0)

Am chatting with Sundaya and will let you know as soon as I can. It may be that I have to buy a bunch of them and re-sell. Let's see...

I will make a post about it from the @survival-archive account when I know more.

Awesome. Gonna hunt for some PDFS for you soon xx

I know you have some great ones... ;)

It was kind of you to mention me, as the idea of helping others was yours, I only wanted to help you and your family...as I tend to do things for people I like, not just for everyone.
:)

Credit where credit is due. The idea would not have been born without you.

Am chatting today with a friend at my old eco community in Bali. They have a bunch of useful documents already on a massive server, so potentially we can add to this.

I like the idea of archive.org but do we have a guarantee they won't get bought out by google at some point?

I also noticed it is possible to store books on Discord, so looking into that too. Perhaps this whole thing could just be a Discord group?

I refuse to use Discord.

I did use them, but i then read of how they record everything and sell it to advertisers. I thought it is bs and ignored it, but then a few days later I changed ISPs and soon as I tried to use discord again, they would not allow me to sign in, saying that my IP has changed and they will want my details again, including my cell phone number. The info they wanted would pinpoint me, which they can do with a check on my ip number, but I guess they got lazy.

Why would my IP number matter? I know people who connect mostly from free connections at coffee shops...does that mean they cannot use discord?

Telegram also were caught selling user data, but they faced bankruptcy because of that so they publicly admitted what they had done and vowed to never do so again. It seems the market has believed them, for most security-conscious people seem to prefer it now.

Of course, since google bought them, one of the worst is whatsapp. It spies and reports on everything you say or record and sends it to google.

I've heard the same regarding Discord. I do use Telegram for participating in various groups. For private messaging I use Signal and highly recommend it.

FYI... WhatsApp was bought by Facebook, not Google but your point about those companies being untrustworthy is certainly valid.

You are right, thanks.

I've heard a bit about Signal, but I have no other info, but luckily I do not need to communicate with anyone through the web, I prefer to use the telephone (not cell). If nyone is spying on me there, it is only the local govt, not the big tech giants.

Thanks for your reply, as I sometimes feel that maybe I dreamt the info about Discord, as nobody else seems to know about it.

This is such a good idea.

I have always been wary of reliance of online sources in case of the 'bad times' coming.

I have built quite a collection of 'real books' on all many of self-reliance topics. I particularly enjoy scouting for bargains on eBay, charity shops. People don't seem interested in physical books so much now so many can be picked up very cheaply.

Bulky books are not so portable though which is the downside. Digital copies on some rugged and solar chargeable device would solve that.

The way I see it, portability of information is key. When the mob is at your door, you ain't gonna pack the books!

Can't remember if you have solar already?

Alas no solar yet. But that is top of my list when the £££ materialise.

Yeah solar is the way forward, I have been using solar for almost 4 years now, first on our bus and now our truck. I love the idea behind the @survival-archive account, let me know if I can help xx

Sabrina used to live in a truck before we met. The drug dealing DJ she shared it with didn't do her too many favours though! But, like you say, solar is essential and she learned a thing or two about how to live on the road and I look forward to the day when she can put those skills to use again.

As for the new account, I feel sure you will be able to help in some way ;)

Am still figuring out where to store the files...

Somewhere they can never be compromised.

Chatting with friend in Bali today. Think I have the answer ;)

Supported and resteemed. Preparation is at heart of Natural Medicine.

Thank you NM. Something tells me you are going to be a big part of this ;)

Thank you. I appreciate all the work you put into sharing your quest/knowledge with others.

My pleasure. Seemed like the logical thing to do :)
