Education is vital to preparing and surviving in any sort of situation. You want as much knowledge as possible at your immediate disposal. More is always better than less. In this post I'll go over one source of education: FEMA.

FEMA Online Courses

Most people don't realize that FEMA offers a huge number of courses for free to any US citizen or pretty much anyone with a US address. You can earn a Frederick Community College credit for completing the program. If you're a serving US military member, these are also good towards promotions.

A good portion of these programs cover bureaucratic procedures and random conduct-related points and how-to's. A number of these also go over how FEMA works. You can't go around spouting crap about "concentration camps" like some do after watching random shit on YouTube. Spend a few hours, learn how it's meant to operate, pick the classes you're interested in, and approach it from an educated perspective.

I've taken ones that were of interest to me specifically and will take more as time allows. They're good quality and to the point. The time required is an hour or so.

One of the most important things to know during a disaster as how to purify water. You can live three weeks without food, but only three days without water. If you drink dirty water you'll get sick and die anyway. Been prepared means you have a chance of survival. I would not count on the government to come to your aid.

I was going to do a series on food, starting with handling fish, foraged sustenance, meat/poultry, and finally water. I had a buddy who was with the engineer corps deploying potable water projects all over the world, had some crazy stories about what goes on in 3rd world countries in terms of water.

Whaaa? You can take courses to learn all about understanding the beast that is FEMA? ;)

Heh they're actually pretty good if you pick ones that suit your interests.

Emergency preparedness is something every single person should have in their toolkit. While I'm no fan of FEMA and the government in general, I strongly encourage anyone who's interested to use all resources at their disposal.

Hell, you're already getting taxed for it. Might as well get something out of it, right? :D

That's another way of thinking about it. Americans are paying for it, it's done, it's free and it has some value not only in terms of knowledge but in terms of credits. A quick search will pull up numerous forum posts about which course who found useful and why. Some are shit, some like the risk management and hazard classes are pretty good.
