Superstition - Does Breaking Mirror Brings You Bad Luck?
It has been believed from ages that if a person breaks a mirror intentionally or unintentionally, it would bring him bad luck for next seven years! Quite a long time though! Let's suppose, if you are in a hurry leaving your home for a life-changing job interview and suddenly you crash into the table placed in your way and Bashh!! you have broken the mirror placed on it! What would you do? Will you cancel the interview by considering the superstition, a fact! or you will ignore it and optimistically go for the interview and hope for the best? Frankly, I will choose to be optimistic!
The Origin of Broken Mirror Superstition
Like my every post of this "Superstition" series, I would like to share some details related to the origin of Broken Mirror Superstition as well. Below are some of the points to be observed;
It is believed to be evolved from the time when the first humans saw their reflections in water. They believed that the image in a water was their soul and any damage to their reflection will in short risk their existence too. That belief led people of American South to cover mirrors in a house when someone died, lest their soul be trapped inside.
Another ancient myth tells us that mirrors were believed to be having magical powers, which can foresee future thus breaking them would bring misfortunes to people.
Mirrors were very expensive in old times and to avoid its breaking a simple tactic was used i.e. it was told that breaking a mirror would bring seven years of bad luck.
Why Seven Years of Bad Luck?
Broken mirrors were tagged with seven years of bad luck by Romans. The total time period of seven years was mentioned because of an ancient Roman belief that it took seven years for life to renew itself. According to which, if a person looking into the mirror is not well, his image would break the mirror and the bad luck would continue for seven years, at the end of which his life will be renewed and the curse will end.
Different Myths/Beliefs around the Globe
Linked to this superstition masses around the world follow various myths/Beliefs:
- If a mirror is broken and you see your reflection in two mirrors at the same time then disappointment will encounter you
- Looking into a mirror with bad health will leave you unlucky
- In Switzerland, breaking a mirror will lead you towards death
- It is unlucky to sleep in a mirror. It means your soul will scare you in the night
- It is considered a bad omen to look at a mirror in candlelight or when the clock strikes at midnight.
- Swedish women avoid looking into the mirrors as there is a fear that they will not meet their true love.
- In Germany there is a superstition that if the mirror hangs by the bed then this means misfortune.
Different Myths/Old Beliefs to Break the Curse!
With the existence of superstitions, people have also created its curse breaking remedies/tools. Some of the interesting ideas are given below:
As per Romans, if a person has broken a mirror and is afraid of seven years of Bad luck, he/she must take all the pieces of the mirror and bury them in the moonlight or throw them into running water, so that none of them can reflect anything ever again.
You may also, leave them for seven hours at the same place when it was fallen to avoid the curse and then pick it up immediately after the hours are up.
Other remedies include, lighting seven white candles on the first night after breaking the mirror and blowing them out at midnight in one breath.
You may also, touch a tombstone with a broken piece of the mirror to avoid the bad luck.
Concluding Remarks about Superstition
A superstition is always something which is fact less and just based on some beliefs or incidents related to it. It makes it way among the minds of many by the word of mouth are people gossiping about it. We need to put it in a different way and change the thought process by spreading awareness.
So, if you have accidentally broken a mirror and now you don't know what to do! here are some of the ideas that you might follow to get self contentment, but before that, being optimistic is the condition to survive. I hope you got my point. Here are some ideas for how to do this:
First of all to clear your mind that you will not be cursed, repeat the following lines in your mind. " Nothing in this world has the power to change my luck except God and I believe in Him and His power to transform my any bad luck into a good one and I believe that my luck is infinite and my blessings are endless.”
Stay strong and acknowledge that all the power to define your luck resides in your own mind.
Mirror is fragile thing and can be broken, so don't worry!
Again, I would like to let you guys know that the purpose of these posts is to spread awareness based on logic without hurting anyone's beliefs or follower-ship. In the end its all about perception!
All the comments are welcomed. Do share your beliefs and thoughts about it!

Great post for your series. I used to be very superstitious but grew out of it. It still intrigues me tho, the fascination us humans have to such believes that are not based on any science.
Thank you!

I'll get back to you after 7 years and tell you if anything happens. haha
