A Castle Sunrise: 29th Jan 2018 🌄
I'm in Devon visiting family and there's a beautiful old Castle that the ancient market town of Totnes was built around. It's right in the middle of town on top of a man-made hill, and overlooks the whole area down to the river Dart beyond.
I was hoping for an incredible sunrise but unfortunately there was a heavy blanket of cloud that obscured the colours beneath. I just got a little glimpse before the sun disappeared behind the greyness.
It's a bit dangerous getting to the top as it's blocked off for public access. But I used to come up here when I was a teenager to drink beer and watch the sunset with my mates so I know the best way in. I'll try again for a better shot when it's not so cloudy :-)
It's one of the best surviving examples of a Norman motte and bailey castle, it was first erected in the 11th century as a wooden palisade on a high mound. The builder was a Norman knight, Judhael de Totnes, who was awarded the old Saxon burgh here by William the Conqueror. The surviving stonework is from the 14th century when the wood was replaced with stone :-)
Wow, this looked beautiful and I agree with you, beautiful moments makes life beautiful
