Elmira Raiway Museum: At The End Of The Line

Sunday, Jul 7th, was a beautiful summer day for a car drive on Prince Edward Island (PEI). Hubby and I left our home near Montague and drove to Souris and then on to the Elmira Railway Museum which is about 42 miles ( 65Km) from Montague.

First up a #beautifulsunday photo hosted by @ace108. It was taken across the road from the museum. Clear blue sky with wind turbines in the background and lupines blooming along the country roadside.





The train system on PEI was constructed in 1871 . It ran tip to tip ~ from Tignish in the West to Elmira at the East end. This really opened up the tiny Island. Many communities sprung up around the railway stations.

Taking the train was a great way to travel around the Island. Sadly, the last train left the Island on December, 1989.





The Elmira Train Station is near the East Point Lighthouse. Elmira Station was the last train stop- the end of the line when travelling by train on the Island.





More people started travelling by car. Trucks began to take freight away from the railroad and the CNN railway did not feel it was feasible to maintain the tracks.

The train tracks have been removed and the path maintained as the Confederation Trail . It is used by the public for biking and hiking.





There’s interesting memorabilia in the museum and one can take a ride on the miniature train. Both adults and kids can ride the rails again. It’s a fifteen minute ride.





Hubby bought me this cute coffee mug in the gift shop. I liked the saying on it.

”Old Railway Fans never die...they just lose track.”

In closing a beautiful wild rose growing by the railway museum. There’s a little visitor checking it out too.
