Sublime Sunday In My Little Corner Of Idaho

in #sublimesunday8 years ago

At the north end of our property, an ephemeral creek flows this time of year. The cows love it and I appreciate not having to fill their water trough every day. It flows into Bacon Creek just past our property, our little tributary is unnamed. (Thank goodness! In Idaho that gives us control over it!) Taking the back way home from our local hot spring leads you to the other end of that creek, where it flows into Goodrich Creek which is a proper year-round waterway.

Just after Bacon Creek joins it, Goodrich Creek flows into the Weiser River and all the water that fell on our property heads out this canyon on its way to the Snake River.

Just a little further down the road you come to this view. That is the town of Council in the distance with the shoulder of Council Mountain on the right, and just out of frame is the local dump. Idaho's landfills have spectacular views!

I got a picture for @papa-pepper's contest this week when our neighborhood llamas were being friendly. I can hardly see a llama without thinking of a poem I learned as a kid...

The one-l lama,
He's a priest.
The two-l llama,
He's a beast.
And I will bet
A silk pajama
There isn't any
Three-l lllama.

Up in Council, there is a new display at the museum. It is a little sad that the high school football team is "The Lumberjacks" and the town was built on an economy that included all sorts of forest products and now what we have is a display at a museum, no jobs or economy.

This sign makes an interesting observation... the employer once valued skilled employees, now they value high-tech and the humans are losing the skills. We are a rather short-sighted species, it seems to me.

It would be interesting to see an old sawyer versus the computer. I suspect the human would win, but it would only be by a tiny amount and take a lot longer. It seems like automation has increased both speed and waste.

Wait...that Sign says "Bacon Valley" - can this be the promised land?

Amazing views and skyline, the clouds in the first picture are particularly dramatic and I really admire them.

It is sad that the skill and experience of a Sawyer has now been replaced by computers and sensors - it might be more efficient but any computer would be hard pressed to beat a real human looking and understanding. No doubt the automated systems let's through far more rotten or damaged wood because the sensors missed it where a real human eye would have rejected it - but because and automated system can work so much quicker the % difference in turnover makes it worth doing.

Well, it was not too promising if you were a pig... This country was used to run hogs, which would be herded down to the hot spring in the next town over for butchering. (I was actually discussing it in the post I just made then gave the wrong tag...) There are still a few pig farmers around supplying us and our neighbors with that food of the gods, bacon!
Thanks for stopping by!

Wow you view is amazing. We have a creek as well isn't it a great feature for any property? I love it. The best views we have going on at the landfill are the bear you sure do have us beat on that.

We have had a bear spend a few weeks on our property for many years, she has not been around this year. I hope she is OK!
It is funny, we have several creeks running right now, the place is a swamp. In about a month, it will so dry and hard you can't set a fence post. It sure is nice while the creeks run though!

The one on our place is really just a little stream that feeds the creek across the road. It rarely goes all the way dry. i can relate to that swampy feel for sure. I have been thinking to learn about mushroom a bit. I think I have a perfect environment.
We had a bear out back once. Sadly I never got to see him. Hubs came home one day and said the bikers down the road were having a BBQ and he thought it looked like a bear. We didn't hear anything else about bear around here after that..
Hubs has a super interesting aunt. Among other things she has been known to put out biscuit and gravy for the bear who visits her place. Everyone says she is nuts but I think that is pretty neat.

There are many flavors of "crazy" and most are pretty entertaining as long as you can get away when you need to... personally, I don't feed the bear... lol!
