Sublime Sunday, covered bridge
here is what he says about it
Welcome to SublimeSunday a tag presenting you with the unique
opportunity to post something a bit different, wacky, crazy or just whatever
takes your fancy and instigated by me @c0ff33a
In 2017, I finally made it (with time enough to spare) to a local
Historic Covered Bridge which at the time was under some renovation.
This bridge was built before the Civil War, and was almost
Destroyed by the Confederate Army as it
retreated from a defeat by the invading Union Army.
They failed to burn the bridge.
You can see that the side cladding has been removed, so that
Some Steel Girders could be inserted.
Over time, the entire structure had begun to lean downstream.
This bridge was part of a Mill Pond set up, across the bridge
From where I was standing to take these photos, there was
(still is) a mill (for grinding grain and perhaps even sawing lumber)
I think they may have breached the mill pond dam at that
Time as well
As you can see, much of the dam still stands on the near bank,
and
Some on the Farside.
This Bridge is open to automobile traffic, it is one lane, and
during this renovation
A STEEL BARRIER was placed on either side,
clearly showing the required height of a vehicle passing through.
It has been hit 14 times in 2018 by people in trucks and
Pulling trailers that were too high/tall.
Without that barrier, the bridge would have been severely damaged.
#People are such idiots.

What a fantastic old bridge, I love seeing those covered style of bridges because we just do not have them in the UK - well not that I have seen anyway. An amazing piece of history, such a shame people with high vehicles “forget” exactly how high they are!

(and for the resteem...yes I noticed😉)
This is the only covered bridge I know of around here,
And certainly the only one I have personal knowledge
Of, so it is quite special to me.
I am from South Ga USA where it is basically flatland,
streams are more swamp and wetland.
Original photo by my cousin, a few miles from my house
I would love to go hike that stream (when I get my hip
Fixed, I shall try to get permission) to see what other
Treasures may have fallen and been left unnoticed.
What a cool old bridge I love this style of bridge and thanks for some of the History of it here, I agree people can be so stupid, we have two underpasses that are for traffic under the train tracks and it seems once a month someone misses all the warning signs and gets stuck under it
We have several 'truck eating bridges'
(ala Charlie Brown "kite eating tree') here in Atlanta as well.
I am sure its a common occurrence in just about every city LOL
Probably so, I have no vote power so I can't upvote right now
