Munich vs Vila do Conde - Planning a City vs Building a City

Munich - A Planned City

Munich is a very friendly city for bikers. The sidewalks and the public parks are usually divided in two, with road signs telling in which side you should be, whether you're on foot or a bike.

A relaxed biker is a happy biker

Many tourists aren't used to this and they end up getting in the way of the bikers. Myself included. I was nearly ran over a couple of bikers, when I wasn't paying enough attention. I got out of their way at the last second, after hearing a few shouts behind me.

Bikers can ride everywhere, including in the Public Parks

Munich is a world apart from where I live in. Everything is well organised and perfectly planned. There is space for cars, not only for driving but also for parking; but there is always space for pedestrians and bikers, too. They even left space for the trees.

It's the difference between Planning a City... and Building a City.

Vila do Conde - A City Built on Improvisation

Where I live it's the polar opposite, a place where sidewalks are mostly nonexistent and both pedestrians and bikers have to take their chances on the street itself, right alongside the chaos of automotive traffic.

Sidewalks? Where we go, we don't need sidewalks!

Just take a look at these tiny sidewalks, with trashcans blocking the passage; the other side of the street blocked with illegally parked cars.

What can a biker do? There's no option but to ride side by side with the cars.

Portuguese Cities - A nightmare for people with special needs

And that's when there are sidewalks. Sometimes you're not that lucky and the street is the only thing available. No, it's not always because of lack of space. I think we simply got used to do things this way.

Why should we plan in advance, when we can save time and plan as we go? (This is our unspoken motto.)

Cute... but a few extra lanes for pedestrians and bikers wouldn't hurt

I guess this is part of our cities' charm but we have to face it, it's a lot more dangerous for pedestrians and bikers than it should be.

А мне ваш город больше нравится, чем Мюнхен.
Но фотографии отличные все.
Спасибо, что поделились.
Непросто было их снимать с высоты?

этот снимок, вероятно, сделан на мосту?

I like your city better than Munich.
But the pictures are great all.
Thanks for sharing.
Was it difficult to remove them from a height?

...this picture was probably taken on the bridge?

Yes, it was. It was taken from a bridge only open for people and bikes. There are a lot of bridges like that all over Munich, connecting public parks to other parts of the city! I liked it.

Thanks for your comment, Svetlana! 😊

Excellent post, Ricardo. I kinda like Portuguese being the kings of improvisation. I've visited many organized cities like Munich, they are beautiful, but not as beautiful as our sometimes chaotic but charming cities!

Sure but it would also be good if our cities were a bit more functional.

Even in big cities like Porto... the Public Transport System leaves a lot to desire.

Sometimes it's a nightmare to go from A to B... and at night, the Metro is not even working. Which means that if you go out on a Friday Night, you either risk drunk driving or you'll wait until sunrise to go home.

The problem is that on the so-called organized cities public transportation close soon, lol! In Tokyo closed at midnight so either you spend a fortune on a taxi or you walk!
They definitely don't practice our beautiful Portuguese schedules ;)!

No Metro at Night... in Tokyo? For real? Wow!!!!!! Most European capitals have Metro running all night long... and it's really useful!

Not only Tokyo... In the "neat" Australia everyone goes to bed at chicken's time. No late nights restaurants, no nothing... unless some bars on the weekends, and that's all! Oh my wonderful Europe!

Ahahah, those people are crazy! 😂😂😂

looked all your posts for 4 days:) all cool!

Спасибо большое! 😊

На здоровье!

I never said that. You are lying. A lying robot duck.

Of course the phrase "slight-of-hand" implies inconsistencies via contradictory notions and ideas, which are typically expresses as nouns and verbiage.

beautiful photo collection...Cheers!

Happy biker on this clean quiet and beautiful city
