Impromptu Photo Tour #1: Thalang Road (Part 1 of 3)
It was my rest day and I was craving for roti. Cure for the crave? Drive down to Thalang Road in Old Phuket Town and head to my favorite roti place.
Thalang Road is known to be the heart of Old Phuket Town, scratch that, I would say the GEM of Old Phuket Town. At present, it is where most tourists (who prefer to stay in this part of Phuket) flock, because of the classic Sino-Portuguese shophouses that lines the street. It is a mixture of different businesses, old and new, refurbished and original. This street has a variety of offering from artsy cafes, charming restaurants, ancient herb shops, hardwares, and craft stores among others.
The photo below is my entry to #streetphotography contest hosted by @juliank
Phuket is the old town or it was called the Old Phuket Town. Phuket has a rich history as a tin - mining country of the Siamese. The era of Western imperialism by 1511 (i.e. 2054), Portuguese settlers came to Phuket and the trade area port of Malacca. They have embraced western culture as well as western science and religion. They have built houses and their architectural style. Portuguese employs Chinese people to build houses and establishment for them. Houses and the establishment of Portuguese have mixed between Portuguese art and Chinese art together source
From the classic shophouses, dated pavements, to the colorful street arts, every inch of this street exudes Phuketian history and personality. So I thought, what better way to showcase this to my fellow Steemians than to do an impromptu 'Photo Tour'? But, I did not have my camera with me, so I had to make do it what my smartphone can capture.
If you walk towards the little street/alley as you can see in the photo above, you will find yourself in Soi Romanee. This street is said to be the 'Red Light' district of Chinese labourers who migrated to Phuket around the 1500s during the Tin Mining Era. At present, this street hosts backpacker hostels, cafes, and even a famous ice cream shop.
Another aspect that adds to the beauty of Old Phuket Town are the street arts. You can see many of these when you drive around town. If I have time, I'll make a post dedicated to Phuket Street Arts soon. :)
I would love to share all my photos in 1 post to make it easier for the reader, but being a Minnow, I have limited bandwidth. :( I'll divide this post to 3 parts, this is part 1 and part 3 would conclude the blog with me reaching my roti place.
