Dublin Pubs

DSC00497.JPG

What's a trip to Dublin without hitting a few Irish pubs. The word 'pub' originated from the existence of public houses where people gathered to discuss current events. Later on it morphed into meaning a place that was licensed to sell alcohol.

DSC00480.jpgInside they tend to be quiet colorful filled with memorabilia from the history of the bar. Unlike here in the states where you can tell the memorabilia is mass produced for a particular business chain.
DSC00483.JPGAll of the memorabilia isn't necessarily from that pub but it does look to be very authentic. Some of it could be valuable to certain collectors.
DSC00503.JPGAlthough each bar was different, one thing they had in common was some great wood working on the bars and chairs. The feel of the wood set up a very comfortable place to sit and have a pint (or two).
DSC00496.JPGIf you look closely in the two bar pictures you will see bottles mounted upside down for dispensing. The popular liquors for each bar are mounted for the bartender to hold a glass underneath, push up on the dispenser, and 35.5 ml (1 shot) is poured into the glass.

I thought it interesting the liquor companies even went so far as to place the labels on the bottles upside down so when placed on the dispenser you could read the label.
DSC00506.JPGIn the post Sunset over the River Liffey I mentioned that my wife had urged me not to stay and watch the sun go completely down over the River Liffey but to get back closer to the hotel. She was right. The street signs on the street we needed to follow kept changing names and the names weren't reflected on our map.

Rather than stand on the street trying to read the map we would duck into a pub, grab a pint and pull our map out. The bartender would notice us and come over and give us some help. The Bleeding Horse was our last stop of three and we were relieved to find out we were only two blocks from the condo we had rented. Maybe we should have just asked the young Irish lass in the photo.

The trip must have been a very nice experience. More to a pub than a pint it sounds like. Was not aware of their history.

The picture of the woodworking is great.

Can't really imagine a tourist coming here and finding a bar worthy of pictures. And we got lots of bars. I have 3 within 6 blocks in my little residential area. Guess the intent was the more, the closer to home....people could walk. Worked back in The Day. Now people park all over and drive home after drinking.

Glad you didn't end up too far off track on the way back!

Every so often you can find an old neighborhood bar that would be worthy of a few pictures with all the great woodwork. None of them are ever associated with a chain of stores.

We did learn a lot about Dublin that night. In particular that a street may change names every couple of blocks.

Now, I wonder how Google would handle this.

Probably very well. I use Google maps in Mexico all the time and it works great. It wasn't available on my trip to Dublin.
