The Street Photographer is Almost a Detective 🕵️📷

Pass without anyone seeing, to photograph without being perceived. Discretion, speed, creativity, daring, patience and precision. These are perhaps the main features that make a street photographer. Characteristics that I acquired with my time and acting working in the streets.

A performance that looks more like that of a detective on mission behind some suspect, of "indications of crime", but in fact what I'm hunting are "souls", unique moments that will never be repeated.

All this for someone who is not a photographer may seem crazy, but the photographer, especially the street photographer, should be discreet in his acting when photographing. People especially nowadays with mass membership of the internet, social networks etc., feel more intimidated when they see a camera in front of them.

People do not feel comfortable, they actually feel "invaded," as if that camera were to steal their identity or something. It is almost an aggression and the street photographer must have this sensitivity to know when to photograph. The camera is a weapon. The act of "lowering the camera" is sometimes necessary.

I've heard reports from very experienced photographers about how they photographed and still photograph today, so they go undetected by the public. I read an interesting testimony from a photographer who acted as a photojournalist during the military dictatorship in Brazil (1960s to the early 1980s) and how journalists and photographers at that time were severely persecuted by the military.

The military saw photographers and journalists as enemies of the regime, so he could not go around freely photographing the acts of abuse of authority committed by the military, so what did he do?

According to him, so that the military did not realize that he was a photographer, he went out to work dressed in a jeans' jacket, a social shirt inside his pants and put his Leica M camera with the strap around his neck, leaving the lens slightly exposed between the clasp of one button and another.

When he pressed the button on the camera, he made the act of coughing so that the click sound was not heard. Thus, he could during the dark years of the Brazilian dictatorship make incredible reports in photos of this dark period in the history of Brazil.

These are lessons that inspire me to continue to pursue this profession and see no limits to what I can do with a camera in my hands.
