Chapter One

The Psychiatrist

Ray Pearce is talking to his psychiatrist about his strange reoccurring nightmares “I’m lying in bed when suddenly I hear a noise” He begins to explain as he nervously rubs his hands together. “I know I should get up and investigate because the children are in the next room but I’m too tired and I decide to stay in bed. Then I hear the noise again this time it’s louder and wakes me up. I decide to get up to see what is happening but I can’t move” Ray explains. As he stops to take a sip of his drink his psychiatrist notices Ray shaking as he places the glass on the table next to him “Then I see a face, its glowing green, very ugly like a goblin or a demon or something, the face smiles at me, it’s a twisted smile with a sinister look to it.”

Ray stops talking “what happens next?” The psychiatrist asks, Ray still does not respond, he looks lost in thought. “What happens next?” the psychiatrist asks again this asking louder. Ray snaps out of his apparent daydream.

“The face is taunting me and I still can’t move, I attempt to lift my hand up to stick my finger up at it but I can barely raise my hand from the bed.”

“He wants me to look to the left of me” Ray explains “but I am still struggling to move” he adds. “Has he told you to look to your left?” the psychiatrist asks. Ray shakes his head “no” he answers “not in words anyway but I know it wants me to look to my left” he explains.

“After a struggle I finally mange to turn myself around and look to my left” Ray looks visible nervous “what do you see?” the psychiatrist asks “it’s dark” Ray answers “at first I can’t see a lot but then my vision begins to clear and I can see outlines of people standing in the room. They seem to be communicating with each but not with speech or sound but telepathically. Then they all turn around and look at me.” Ray carries on explaining as he looks nervous and fidgets.

“They’re not people” he explains in a terrified tone “they’re dark grey skinned and I am still struggling to see them but I can see they are not human and they look interested in me. It’s like they are talking (telepathically) about me and what they are going to do to me.” Ray begins to cry.

“What happens next, Ray?” the psychiatrist asks as he notices Ray has slipped in to another day dream. “They begin to walk to me; one of them touches me with a strange metal stick.” Ray stops talking again “then what?” The psychiatrist asks “then I remember nothing” Ray answers “its seven o’clock in the morning and my alarm clock wakes me” he adds.

The psychiatrist continues to write when his receptionist interrupts “your next appointment has arrived and scheduled to begin in ten minutes” she explains.

The psychiatrist looks at his watch and then looks at Ray and says “I would like to see you as soon as possible” as he looks through his dairy “what about Wednesday at three o’clock?” he adds “Wednesday three o’clock is good with me” Ray answers as he picks up his jacket “I’ll see you Wednesday” he confirms as he walks out of the room.

Chapter Two

The Family

After a twenty minute drive Ray is back home, his wife Laura walks out to greet him as he parks his car on his drive “how did it go?” Ray gets out the car “waste of time” he answers “he wants me to go back Wednesday” he adds as he shuts the car door and walks to the house.

As he walks in he notices the house is very quiet “where are the children?” he asks Laura “they have gone to my mom’s she said she will bring them back at about seven” Laura answers. Ray walks to the fridge and gets himself a beer as Laura watches “so that’s your plan, just sit here drinking yourself to near death again?” Ray opens the beer and ignores his wife as she continues to talk about his drink problem.

She storms of upstairs as Ray quickly drinks his beer and gets himself another. The door knocks and Laura comes rushing down to open it. It’s the children nine year old Jack and seven year old Lucy with Laura’s mom. Laura gives both of the children a hug and they both quickly run over to their dad.

“Where you two been?” Ray asks playfully “nanny took us to the park and get some ice cream” Jack answers. Laura’s mom Mandy is a retired teacher and has in the past struggled to see eye to eye with Ray. She leaves the house and calls Laura out with her “is he drinking already?” she asks “he’s had a couple it’s not like he is drunk” Laura states in his defense. Mandy shakes her head “disgusting a full grown man like that drinking this time of the day” she mutters “it’s after seven o clock” Mandy shouts as she walks to her car.

Laura walks back in to the house and looks at the children as they sit on their dad’s lap telling him about their day. “Come on then kids” she shouts as she begins to walk up the stairs “time for a shower and bed” she adds Jack and Lucy give their father a kiss and run upstairs, Ray gets himself another beer.

Its half past nine by the time Laura comes down the stairs “the kids are asleep” she shouts to Ray as she enters the kitchen, there is no response. “The kids are asleep” she shouts again but there is still no answer. Laura walks in to the room only to see Ray asleep on the couch. She turns out the light and walks out of the room leaving Ray downstairs.

By the time Ray wakes up he has no idea what the time is, it’s very dark and Ray struggles to see anything. Ray desperately tries to find his bearings but it’s so dark he cannot do it. Suddenly Ray blacks out.

The next thing he remembers is waking up face down on the floor as he raises his head he notices blood “oh shit” he says to himself as he attempts to get up but fails and ends up back on the floor. Ray does not even realize that his wife his behind him until she coughs to get his attention. He manages to get up and then looks at his wife “you had a few last night didn’t you?” she asks Ray looks next to his chair and sees a piles of empty bottles “you turned the light off” he moans “It was pitch black, I fell over trying to find my way out of the room” he adds as he walks upstairs “where you going?” Laura asks “for a shower” Ray answers. Laura looks at the blood “well I had better clean up this mess” she moans to herself.

After just ten minutes upstairs Ray rushes to the front door dressed in a suit “where you going?” Laura asks, Ray looks at his watch “work some emergency meeting bullshit, I don’t think I will be gone for long” he explains.

Upon Ray leaving the house Laura gets the children ready for school when walking to the school she is surprised to see Ray driving back home, she waves in an attempt to get his attention but he does not notice her and he drives right past. “That’s weird” she says to the children as they continue walking the school “I wonder how come he is back already?” she adds.

When Laura gets to the school gate she gives her children a hugs and kisses “have a good day” she shouts as the children run to their friends on the field. Laura smiles to herself as she begins her journey back home.

Laura enters the house to see Ray sitting in front of the TV with a beer “its half nine in the morning” she moans “how come you are not at work? She asks. Ray laughs “because I don’t have a job anymore” he answers “they’ve gone bust” Laura holds her head in her hands “how you going to pay for this place without a job?” she asks in a concerned tone, Ray shakes his head “I’m just going to have to find something else, it can’t be that hard” he calmly says “I will start tomorrow” he adds as he takes a sip of his beer.

Chapter Three

The Flashbacks

Its nine o’clock Wednesday morning and Ray it is on his computer looking for a job, he types out a C.V and after just twenty minutes begins to job hunt. After sending his CV to five different job openings Ray decides to have something to eat. Half way through eating his egg on toast Laura enters the house “I have created my CV and sent it to five different job openings” Ray informs Laura “well let’s hope one of them come through” Laura exclaims “I’m sure they will” Ray insists as he takes a bite of his toast. Laura begins to put some shopping away “don’t forget you got an appointment with the psychiatrist at three o clock” Laura tells Ray. Ray smiles “how could I forget that” he answers.

It’s two o clock and Ray is getting ready for his appointment, he is suited and ready to go when his wife comes down the stairs holding a pile of dirty laundry. Ray walks up to his wife and gives her a kiss “I will see you later, I love you” he tells her as he walks out the door. Ray gets in his car and begins to drive he is driving for just five minutes when the radio in his car begins to make a static sound. He quickly turns off the radio then he notices his phone is lighting up and picks it up to see why, as he as he messes he can tell something is not right “what the fuck?” he asks himself as his phone seems to be opening apps and websites on its own.

Ray looks at the road just in time to notice that the traffic in front of him had come to a complete stand still. He breaks sharply and manages not to hit anything and he realizes how lucky he was. He puts the phone down and decides to concentrate on the road when something in the sky catches his eye “what’s that?” Ray gasps to himself as he sees a ball of light floating in the sky.

The light just sits stills as Ray takes glances as he tries to keep his eye on the road. Much to Ray’s amazement the light suddenly zooms off and out of sight making no sound and leaving no sign. Ray takes one more look before again being forced to break sharply due to the traffic in front of him coming to a halt.

Ray arrives at his destination he is waiting for his psychiatrist in the waiting room when suddenly he remembers something from his childhood. He sees his brother (Marcus) but a young version of his brother his playing on a field. Ray runs over to him and pretends to shoot him with a plastic gun. His brother runs off in to the wood “don’t go too far” their mother shouts as they run away playfully.

Then they stop Ray says “I am going to shoot you” but suddenly Marcus is not interested in playing. Marcus is looking at a tall figure he can see in the woods he begins to walk towards “Marcus, where are you going?” Ray asks “what are you looking at?” he asks again as Marcus ignores him. Then Ray notices it too “who is that?” he asks his brother “I don’t know” Marcus answers.

They walk up to the figure slowly and are only about ten meters away when Marcus falls over making a noise that disturbs the figure. The figure turns around Marcus and Ray see its huge black eyes on its strange scary looking non-human face. Much to the horror of Marcus and Ray the figure is joined by another and both look at Marcus and Ray intensely. “Run” Ray shouts and Marcus and Ray quickly begin to run back towards their mother. Ray remembers telling his mother of the experience but his mother seemed dismissive “children and their imaginations” she laughed.

Ray is deep in thought when his name is called he quickly snaps out of it and makes his way to speak to his psychiatrist. Ray tells the psychiatrist about losing his job and waking up in his own blood and admits he has a drink problem and the psychiatrist offers him counselling and further advice via a variation of leaflets. “Take a look through them and see if there is anything there that you believe may be beneficial for you” he advises. Ray takes the leaflets. And begins to tell of his flashback “childhood memories that seem real to us as children and then throughout adulthood can unwillingly and unwittingly be fabricated by the brain” the psychiatrist explains. Ray is unconvinced by the answers he is getting but remains polite and open to suggestion.

“I would like to introduce you to a colleague if I may?” the psychiatrist says as he continues to write notes “yes if you think he can help?” Ray answers. “His name is Brian Andrews, he is a hypnotherapist, and he is very good and experienced in similar cases to yours” the psychiatrist explains. “Shall we say Wednesday again?” the physiatrist asks “Wednesday is good with me” Ray confirms.
Ray looks at his watch and sees it is five minutes to four and begins to walk to his car.

Chapter Four

Missing Time

Ray puts the key in his car and begins to drive home he turns the radio on but to his surprise it is still not working. Its January so its cold outside and very dark, Ray is driving when he notices a bright light in front of him “what the fuck is that?” he asks himself again. This time the light appears to be in the middle of the road and Ray finds himself driving through it. For a couple of seconds the car is so lit up it looks like daylight before quickly turning black.

The car stops working including the lights “oh no” Ray cries as he sits in the dark. He quickly turns the key it takes a couple of attempts but to his delight the car starts. Five minutes later when Ray pulls on the drive he is surprised to see his wife standing outside waiting for him. He pulls up and gets out of the car. “Where have you been?” his wife asks “you know where I have been” Ray answers as he shuts the car door and begins to walk to the house “I went to see the psychiatrist” he adds. “That was at three o clock its now half past eight” he wife says as she follows him looking at her watch. Ray stops walking and looks at his watch and just like his wife told him it is half past eight.

Ray is confused “but I come straight back home” he insists holding in head “well you’re back now that’s all that counts” his wife states cheerfully Ray smiles but remains confused by what he believes to be missing time. He thinks back to when he was driving through the light and although Ray thinks it may have something to do with his experience he decides not to say anything to his wife.

Ray walks around the house “something is different” he states “but I cannot figure out what it is” he adds as he looks around the house confused. He looks at his wife “have you had your hair cut?” he asks, his wife smiles “I had it cut last week” she answers. Ray shakes his head “yes I know but have you had it cut since?” he asks. “No” Laura answers “why?” she asks as Ray is still wondering around the room looking for differences “your hair looks different as well” Ray explains before he stops. “Did we always have this wallpaper in the landing?” Ray asks as he walks in to the landing looking at the walls. Laura is confused “you put it up about two years ago” she answers Ray smiles “so I did” he states as he is still looking at the wallpaper.

Ray walks upstairs to put something more comfortable on “are the children in bed?” he asks his wife as he walks up the stairs still looking at the wallpaper “yes, they have been for about an hour” his wife answers as she walks in to the kitchen “do you want me to put you some food out?” she shouts up the stairs “I’m starving” Ray answers.

Ray eats his food and goes to the fridge to get a beer, he knows his wife is now in bed so he gets out a bottle of Whiskey and pours himself a generous double shot as well. Ray sits on the couch and begins to think about the light in the middle of the road. As he begins to think deeper he slowly begins to remember something about his journey back home. As he approaches the light the car stopped leaving Ray sitting alone in complete darkness. “Oh no” Ray says to himself when suddenly he looks out of the car only to see a figure looking at him. Ray remembers the face from his childhood memories but he is horrified to realize he cannot move. Next thing Ray knows he is in a strange place with metallic walls. He is now lying on a cold metal table and he is still paralyzed.

He attempts to look around but can hardly move than he sees something, he sees another figure. This one does not look like the others and it walks up to Ray who is by now terrified but still unable to move. It begins to look at Ray closely putting his face very close to Ray’s face. He then looks at Ray in the eyes seeming a little cautious itself. Suddenly it shows Ray its teeth and Ray can see they look razor sharp it then growls and is just about to launch an attack at Ray.

But before it manages to do so Ray is woken by his wife. He wakes up screaming and terrified which also scares his wife “what’s wrong?” his wife asks startled and confused by Ray’s reaction “it’s nothing” Ray answers “just a dream” he adds still in a confused state.
