An Amazon In The Amazon - A Short Story (Word Challenge)

in #story9 years ago

"All of it, it's yours," the small man said.

He offered the bag to the amazon warrior. Inside, dozens of gold coins.

"And interest on top of that, for every day you don't return."

"And if I never return?" the amazon warrior replied.

"Then it will still go to your village. To your people. But if the legends are true..."

The warrior said nothing. She towered over the desperate man. Thick thighs and shoulders. Long black hair. A scar through her left eyebrow.

"This creature you speak of."

"It comes at night. Yellow glowing eyes. A row of sharp fangs that its lips cannot hide. It's head is the size of a small boulder."

"Like a tiger?"

"Bigger. Much. And 8 legs. It can outrun the lightening. It lives deep in the forest. It has feasted and should be resting ...please... we have lost so many people."

The warrior grabbed the bag and tossed to a tall woman of stood beside her.

"Shall we ride together?" she asked.

"No,I will be back before day break."

                                                                         -

The warrior slowly made her way through the thick forest. Night had come. The moonlight was all that lit her path.

She heard a rustle behind her. With an unsheathed sword she turned.

Yellow eyes. More vivid then she imaged. Two floating balls of fire in the night.

They got closer, slowly. Advancing on their prey.

The warrior held her ground. She grabbed her sword with both hands and waited for the approaching creature.

Thunder sounded above her.

Rain fell on her exposed shoulders. It came down hard. Heavy.

The warrior peered through the rain. The creature was close. It was at home in the rain, a pluviophile. It used it as a weapon.

It sneered at her.

Sweat and rain loosened her grip. The warrior tightened her grasp.

A bolt of lightening.

The creature rushed with great speed and leaped. The warrior fell back. She swung. It pierced the creature's neck. With a moan, it let out of its last breath. The warrior moved from under the creature before it fell. It lay there without motion.

The battle was won.

She would have to hurry to make it home before the sun started to rise.
